For info, Ancestry probate is now 1858 to 1966, 1973 to 1996 (not sure what has happened to 1967 to 1972)!

Well it's probably best to go the the Gov site where there are no breaks and it's free!

Ann, looks like you have the right BC and Choccy looks to have found Emily, easy to get mistaken about your age (especially as you get older) - or his wife might have guessed the year for 1939 register but knew not to forget his birthday!

It's a long way down the line, but your cousin could look for support on understanding the reasons for her father taking his own life. I have a friend who's husband did this back in the 1990s, and she has never got to grips with the reasons why - they were OK financially and had 3 very young children. I don't think she'll ever fully come to terms with it, but has to get on with life for the sake of the children.

All you can do is offer any support she needs even some 50 years down the line - looking at the family history is probably not going to give any reasons, just a bit about his background to better understand what he went through in childhood.

There may not be any "logical" reason. You said he was a "strange private man" - maybe he had some undiagnosed mental health problem.

If he served in WW2, he possibly had undiagnosed PTSD. I would doubt if much help and understanding of mental health issues would have been available even in the 50s and 60s.

I had a brother in law, who took his own life in the 1960.s leaving a not quiet 3 year old son. No money worries, but alway a person who "put off" doing things,until he had everything possible , married 12 years before he would consider having kids!
Had to have the house, car etc.Had a broken childhood, which probably contributed to his state of mind! Sad really, but widow, did get married twice more
