Margert Green therefore daughter of John Green and Isabella Stitt. No marriage record under old parishes but obviously used his name.

They probably did marry but perhaps not Church of Scotland. If son James was born 1855, you may get some extra information on his birth registration as they were still trying to work out what to record. If they had children after 1860, birth registrations should give you date and place of marriage. Of course death regs of John and Isabelle will confirm their parents names if the informant knew the details. :-)

Pity John's not with his family in 1841 (unless of course Margaret Wood is his Mum and she's remarried)

One last thing...Still cant find birth record of Robert Martin (married to Margaret Green) . It says he was age 29 which makes the 1845 bit right as stated on 1881 census...and a widower, marriage cert also states parents as David Martin (farm labourer) and Mary Sharp.... there is old parish church record for marriage in 1830, May 5 between a Marrion Sharp and David Martin, so that would be prob be right. Have looked under all church records... possible not registered?

Brilliant again many thanks

Have just found a david robert Martin with only one parent mentioned .. david Martin as father...on baptism records(presbyterian) but baptism date 1849... so he would have been 4? Could this be right for the times does anyone know?

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 23 Apr 2017 18:30

Quite common for only the father to be named on the christening record (after all he's the important one, the Mum just carried the baby for 9 months lol). The age of the christening can vary (even into adulthood) as I think there was a fee to pay.

Have you tried looking for Robert's death? That would hopefully name both his parents if the informant knew the details.

EDIT

That should have said David Robert Martin. Brain going quicker than fingers :-)

Tip... I always look for a wife's death first as it is cross referenced with her maiden surname. Her death registration will tell you if she is "married to". Or "widow of" at the time of her death. This can narrow the timescale for the husband's death. Helpful if you are looking for a fairly common name.

Ti

Ti Report 23 Apr 2017 18:43

thanks thats useful to know!

Ti

Ti Report 23 Apr 2017 18:46

problem with scotlandspeople is its pay to view each record... and there isnt an option to search for a death with an approximate birth date... hmm.

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 23 Apr 2017 18:53

Oh! Blast, there used to be that option. Somethings just don't change for the better!

Are you sure that it doesn't give age at death when you look at all the results?

1871 census gives Robert's birth year as 1844 and place of birth as Kirkmichael, Dumfriesshire
