Hi all,I have Alexander John's death certificate. He died 7/5/1886 aged 74yr and it states his parents were James Wilson (Dock Builder,Master) deceased(no date) and Margaret Wilson nee Harper deceased (no date). Jane Walker Wilson's death certificate says she died 7/3/1886 aged 64yrs and her parents were John Taylor (spirit merchant) and Jane Taylor nee Walker (both deceased). Now I need to find out about James Wilson and Margaret and where they lived etc.Marj

Hi all,BOY! I must have the most complicated family tree of all time. Was reading up yesterday on Scots who went to Canada/Nova Scotia in the 1700s and came across 2 books called "Directory of Scottish Settlers in North America 1625-1825" & "Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to Canada Before Confederacy" both by D.Dobson.Say they are widely acclaimed by geneologists.Available on Ancestry. Will try get to library to check them out.Thought I'd write down all with Wilson surnames then go back to Scottish records and see if any match.Maybe Alexander's father (or his parents) went there first and the dad married in Canada.Just a thought.Marj

Can't see the birth / baptism of daughter Marjory Taylor Wilson, born c1847.

There was a Margaret Taylor Wilson born in 1849, but with different parents (John Wilson & Jane Scott) , and she's with them in later censuses -

Well this seems to be Jane Taylor in 1841. Address is correct for the marriage. Parents appear to be John and Jane. No mention of Walkers in these.

OK I've finally caught up! So Jane was the daughter of Jean Walker who then married John Taylor or Jean Taylor who married John Taylor or maybe Jean Taylor who had a liason with David Walker. Possibly not the last scenario.

Here's the baptism of daughter Jane Walker Wilson who's in the 1851, 1861 & 1871 censuses;

JANE
ALEXANDER WILSON/JANE TAYLOR
F
Birth: 17/2/1849

That's listed as an RC baptism.

You say his firstborn child was Alexander James 1845.
Are you sure ?

I think this child is the first (he's in the 1851, 1861, & 1871 censuses posted earlier by Shirley):

Alexander John Wilson
in the Scotland, Select Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950

Name: Alexander John Wilson
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 19 Aug 1844
Baptism Date: 7 Oct 1844
Baptism Place: Inverurie,Aberdeen,Scotland
Father: Alexander John Wilson
Mother: Jane Taylor
FHL Film Number: 993192

That's listed as a Church of Scotland baptism.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 5 Jun 2017 15:47

The 1843 marriage wasn't a Roman Catholic marriage.

It's listed as a Church of Scotland marriage on SP, and the details posted earlier by Greyghost say it was a Free Church marriage - both Presbyterian.

There is no RC marriage on SP's church register records, between an Alexander Wilson and anyone named either Taylor or Walker.

Thank you all so much. The info I have from family is Alexander(1813) was the district inspector of railways as in 1881 census. He married Jane Taylor Walker in 1843,1st Born Alexander James B1845 + my Great grandfather was James Joss -3rd born. What I know for sure is that Alexander Snr was born in Halifax NS about 1813 but am dubious re parents are Margaret Harper and James Wilson(don't know who found this when doing their family tree)but I have hit a brick wall unless I can find Halifax birth records and they elusive.Family are Catholic.I don't know when or why they went to Canada, where they lived,or when returned but all originated in and around Aberdeen. My Grandma Marjory Jane birth extract shows 1883 district of Gorbals, county of Lanark.Just need to ascertain Alexander's parents.Military crossed my mind.History has it we are somehow connected to Cree First Nation People.Trying to ascertain this before I kick the Bucket.Marj

FS has this birth. Has someone got this child mixed up with another (much later) Alexander born / baptised in Nova Scotia in 1813??

Scotland Births and Baptisms
Name Alexr. Wilson
Gender Male
Christening Date 16 Sep 1750
Christening Place CAIRNIE BY HUNTLY,ABERDEEN,SCOTLAND
Birth Date 16 Sep 1750
Father's Name James Wilson
Mother's Name Margaret Harper

Just possibly this couple, with wife's name different (or mistranscribed) ??

WILSON
JAMES
MARY HARPER/FR276 (FR276)
01/12/1748

Cairnie

Marj did put a question mark against Margaret's name.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 4 Jun 2017 15:45

SP shows no marriage of a James Wilson to a Margaret Robson. There's only one to a Jean or Janet Robson in Fraserburgh area in 1792.

And no marriage to a Margaret Harper.

Only one to a Jean Harper in Kilmaurs in 1805, and one to another Jean Harper (unless there's a mistake in the transcription of the date) in 1806 in Kilmarnock

EDIT:
Of course, that doesn't mean there was no such marriage - just that there's no record of it.

EDIT again:

There's a James Wilson / Margaret Harper in 1735 in Ayrshire - but clearly not the same couple!
