04 January 1851 - Staffordshire Advertiser - Stafford, Stafford
NEWCASTLE.
for this borough were held yesterday (Friday) before the Recorder. Sir Fortunatus Dwarns, and the Borough Magistrates.—John Kinnersley, a working shoemaker, was charged with stealing 9d, the moneys of John Morgan, of Shelton. It appeared that on the 6th Nov last, in the evening, the prosecutor was going along the Higherland, when a woman, who was standing with three men on the pathway, pushed against him and the prisoner, one of the party, came foward, knocked him down with a blow, and leaning on his stomach effected the robbery.
The prisoner was further charged with stealing £5 from a party with whom he had been drinking at the Horse and Jockey public house.
The prisoner pleaded guity to this charge. The robbery was effected on the 5th Nov, the prosecutor being drunk at the time.
The jury found the prisoner guilty of the former charge, and it appearing that some time ago he had been charged with committing a violent assault, in which he used a hammer, he was sentenced to being transported for seven years.

I think you have cracked it for me . Maria kinnersley nee Murphy was a witness at Harriet's marriage I have the marriage certificate to prove that. Maria was not married when Harriet was born but did get married very soon after because she is Maria kinnersley on the census
What do you think ?

PricklyHolly Report 16 Aug 2017 19:02

Hi David

If you check out the image of the 1861 census.......the writing is a bit difficult to read but, Harriet and William's surname does look more like "Wagstaff" and not "Waylett"

It would seem then that Harriet was the illegitimate daughter of Maria Murphy.
