Yes, this is the problem!

The surname is unheard of (must have been the pronunciation!)

I did have confirmation from someone who was researching the Knill family about the name Serkwell but I am well and truly stuck there.

Phil

Thank you very much for your reply.

No, on the contrary. You have suggested an alternative surname!

Andy - thank you very much for this.

Do you think finding other siblings and their places of birth may lead me to confirming if this is the same woman?

Andrew Report 16 Aug 2017 22:45

She is the only Southwell in can see, but close variations of the name...

Southall
Southill
Southwill
Southell
Southhill

and thats just in Devon around 1720.

Seeing the actual written record might help might help.

The name would have been written as the person thought he heard it. A lot of surnames didn't have a definate spelling until a rise in literacy, in 19th century.

The name on the image looks more like Serkweth to me although Findmypast have transcribed it as Serkwett.

Hi.

Thank you for the above.

What image of Elizabeth are you referring to?

Is this a lost cause?? :-)

As said seems you have seen Parish Record, and the Archives staff are no wiser?, unless anybody from below might have an idea if they saw it!...

Original OPR on Find My Past -? her surname looks like - SERK (R or S )OOT( H or T)

Have hopefully put it into Keepsake with access to helpers, and have sent by PM to Phillip (check your in box)

There's certainly some unusual names on the same page.

EDIT - closer look, probably more like Serkweth! It's the "W" that threw me

Long shot, but have you followed up on their children to see if they have very helpfully given any of their children a middle name that could be Sarah's surname?

Thank you.

Do you know if Devon has a dedicated OPC site, like Cornwall does?
