Those children kept me awake last night wondering.... I did think they were sent away for some reason.

And now the name Hart has cropped up, as in John hart Williams (maybe) Shirley's post yesterday 12.04

ArgyllGran Report 26 Oct 2021 20:07

So we have a selection of fathers for Rose/Rosemary/Rosina -

John Paulson, Gus Engstrom, or Thomas Engstrom.

Whoever he was, he must have been in NZ, as Rose is said to have been born there.

As Rose was born 1875, her father's relationship with Mary should predate Mary and John Duckett's marriage, also in 1875.

But Mary was calling herself Engstrom in the US.

It looks maybe as if she was with Paulson first, then Duckett, then Engstrom.

If all the dates were correct - but they probably aren't - they would mean that Mary left the family behind in 1890 and emigrated to America, leaving John unable to look after the children properly (per the report in 1892), with the result that they were put into the Caversham school, and then sent to their uncle in the US in 1902.

That would make sense then ArgyllGran, what a mess!

A piece about the Caversham School in 1883 - long before the Duckett children were there, but fascinating:

The writer makes it sound idyllic!
