Hi everyone,

I moved to NZ 30 years ago but grew up in Selborne, Hampshire, UK. I'm trying to find out information about my relatives and ancestors as my father died at just 57 back in 1997 and never really knew anything about his family tree.

A good few years ago, a lovely lady named Tracy Hope I believe contacted me and had done quite a bit of research on the Norman family but sadly over the years and much moving around I don't seem to have all the information any more. I'd like to be able to fill in the gaps, particularly as my son now lives in England and wants to find out more about where (and who) he is a part of.

A little about me - I was born Jacqueline Elizabeth Norman. My father was John Reginald Norman (1940 - 1997). His father was Owen Llewellyn Norman, who I never knew, and he was one of three sons born to Hori Norman and Elizabeth Amy Warren. Many of my family were builders or carpenters I believe.

If anyone has any information or would like to know what very little info I also have, that would be wonderful :-)

Your birth registration from the free to use site - https://www.freebmd.org.uk

Covers birth, marriages and deaths from Q3 1837 when registration began until c mid 1980's at present. Mother's maiden name will not appear pre 1912 on this site, nor age at death pre mid 1860's

Births Mar 1973 (>99%)
Surname First name(s) Mother District Vol Page
NORMAN JACQUELINE ELIZABETH FLETCHER BASINGSTOKE 6B 547

6 weeks are allowed in which to register a birth which will be why the registration doesn't appear until the March Quarter (Jan/Feb/Mar) of 1973

As the Mother's maiden name is shown the site will allow you to look for sibling births and a marriage between Norman and Fletcher (exceptions may apply!)

Family on the 1939 register - register taken of all civilians with one or two exceptions at the outbreak of WW2 to allow ID cards, ration books etc to be produced (google will tell you more) When the NHS was introduced the serial numbers became NHS numbers for those people. The register was kept up to date as possible until c 1990
It's available to members of Ancestry or Find My Past - someone will do you look ups.

1939 register

Oloen L Norman 30 Nov 1903 Male Bricklayer Married 32 1 Head
Thelma M Norman 11 Jan 1914 Female Unpaid Domestic Duties Married 32 2 Wife
The record for this person is officially closed.

The closed record will be someone who is under 100 years of age whose death has not been picked up for the record to become public (privacy) I don't see an earlier Norman / Pavitt birth than John which would have been my first thought

Oh my goodness, this is all absolutely amazing, thank you! This is definitely my family, my grandmother was Thelma Mabel Pavitt. This is really fantastic, thank you so much! I had no idea there were so many resources available, it's fascinating. I really appreciate you taking the time to look all this up!

Looking at the image of the 1939 Register posted by Greyghost - there is no closed record with Owen and Thelma.

That's a mistake on FMP.

Another free site where if you don't have access via any of the genealogy sites, you'll find England census records, amongst many other records including baptisms, marriages, burials -

https://www.familysearch.org

It's well worth you finding your way around these free sites.

Others, although not necessarily complete, include -

https://www.freecen.org.uk (census records)
https://www.freereg.org.uk (parish records)

ArgyllGran Report 12 Oct 2022 11:55

When using FamilySearch (link in GG's post above), search in "Records", and NOT "Family Tree".

Records are actual records.
Family Trees are just what other people have put on their trees - but not everyone researches accurately, and trees frequently have mistakes.

Other people's trees may help to point you in the right direction, but always check out the records for yourself, and don't assume the tree is correct.
