Looking for ancestors of Henry Driver born 1640 who married Mary Cook.

How did you work back to them?

Of course, you/we will be lucky to find anything at all from so long ago.

There's a Henry Driver who had several children with his wife Mary in Putney in the early 1700s - but I don't know that Mary's surname.
Is that your man - though he would be in his 60s and older, if you've posted the correct DOB?


A Henry Driver married a Mary Cooke in 1620 in Woodbridge, Suffolk - but that's clearly not him.

The only other information I have is that he was born in 1640 and had a son John in 1669.

Where?

Even if you don’t know where he was born, an indication of which part of the country would very much help those trying to find them for you.

The only John Driver born (or at least baptised) in1669 that I can see on Ancestry is one in Bourton on the Hill, Gloucestershire - but his father's name was William.

A tree on Ancestry has a John Driver born 1670 in Cheltenham, and his mother's name was Mary Cooke - BUT his father was Matthew.

Where did you find the information about Henry, Mary and John?

When you say your local library ‘did for you’ are you saying someone looked it up for you?

You still haven’t confirmed what part of the country they were living. You also should confirm where this information was found as in what records.

Added: freebmd gives us 1857 births for Mary Ann Driver in Greenwich and West Bromwich.

However, there were lots of Drivers in Gloucestershire , so I can't completely guarantee that those are the correct records.

I don't see any records showing that John Driver's father was Henry.


The trees say that John's mother was Mary Cooke, but that his father was Matthew - which is the one I mentioned earlier.
John is said to be born in Cheltenham, but there's no record to prove it.

Can't even be sure that that 's the John they mean.
Awre is about 20 miles from Cheltenham

Another reason for always checking out the research done by others.

As you said, Names, it would be helpful to know where the person in the library found mention of Henry.

Presumably somewhere online - but where?

He works at the family archive in the local library.

I still don't see any record of who his father was, nor where John was born.

Even trees on Ancestry, normally prone to inaccuracies, don't give his father's name - although they do suggest birth in Cheltenham - but without documentary evidence.

Large numbers of Ancestry trees say that Ann Drury's father was Henry Drury , and her mother Mary Cooke.

Maybe somebody's mixed up the parents?

However, there's no documentary proof offered, and I don't see the marriage in FS or Ancestry.

The trees also say that Ann was baptised on 9 Sept 1661 in Weston-sub-Edge - but no proof on any of them.
They've probably all copied from each other without checking anything, as often happens.
