You're welcome, Jean.

I've just found the actual death cert on FS:

William Muir
Death • South Africa, Civil Death Registration, 1955-1966
Name William Muir
Sex Male
Age 65
Death Date 18 Sep 1958
Death Place Germiston, Transvaal, South Africa
Death Place Germiston
Birth Year (Estimated) 1893
Birthplace Scotland
Event Type Death

It gives his DOB as 9 June 1893.
It says he was married (maybe just means to Mary ?) and was a fitter with ERE (don't know what that stands for).
Duration of last illness:
2 days coronary thrombosis; "several months" carcinoma of prostate.
Informant: S Kn...... (can't read the name - possibly Knoeren) 9 Jack Street, Germiston.
The informant's qualification is "causing cremation" - and is also informant on many other death certs "causing cremation" or "causing burial", so I assume that's someone at the crematorium/cemetery.

GP: Dr Marnewycke

Thank you ArgyllGran ,
PM'd you .

ArgyllGran Report 19 Feb 2023 12:24

William's death , on FS:

William Muir
Male , White
65
Cremation: 22 Sep 1958
Braamfontein, Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa
City Of Johannesburg Braamfontein Crematorium
Death: 18 Sep 1958
YOB: 1893

Address: 18 President Court, Germiston.
Died at Germiston Hospital.
Cause of death: Coronary thrombosis and carcinoma of prostate.

The ashes were taken away on 29/9/58.

Possibly his death on Ancestry:

William Muir
in the Transvaal Province, South Africa, Estates Death Notice Index, 1855-1976
Name: William Muir
Death Year: 1958
Death Country: South Africa
Title: Transvaal Estates Death Index (Master of the Supreme Court, Pretoria)
Source: National Archives, Pretoria
Reference Number: 6876/58

My guess would be that they returned to Scotland in 1949 because Mary was ill.
He would probably have flown back to SA after her death, so there will be no online record of that.

The marriage for our reference:

William Muir
Groom
South Africa, Transvaal, Civil Marriages, 1870-1930
Marriage: 4 September 1926
Germiston, Transvaal, South Africa
Birth 1893
Spouse: Mary Moore

On the immigration record they are both 56 - he is a 'Fitter' and the address to which they are going is 7, Tassie Street, Shawlands, Glasgow

Also going to that address is Alexandrina Moore aged 51, a Dressmaker

There is a thread on Genes about them but I can't seem to find it , working on a new laptop and seem to be missing a few things.

Jean

Jean Report 19 Feb 2023 11:01

Sorry , they are both on the electoral roll in Glasgow in 1950 staying with 2 of Mary's sisters and then a few months later in 1951 they are at another address in Glasgow where Mary died .

Jean

Jean Report 19 Feb 2023 10:58

His signature does match the one on her death cert.

Jean

Jean Report 19 Feb 2023 10:58

Thanks for replying,
Mary died in 1951 in Glasgow but up until then there is no sign of either of them in Scotland .

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 19 Feb 2023 10:55

Not sure that such records are online
When did Mary die?
Does William's signature on the death cert match exactly the signature on the marriage record?
