No help with the query - and I expect Delboy already knows, but posting just in case not:

Re the 5 children Jane's mother is said to have had by 1911 census:

She'd actually had six, but one had died:

SPARKS, OWEN mmn MCGHAN (died in infancy 1894 )
GRO Reference: 1894 M Quarter in COCKERMOUTH Volume 10B Page 580

Catherine 1896, Eliza 1898, George 1900, Jane 1907, and Bessie (Elizabeth) 1910 already posted.

Bessie died in 1911, after the census.
Eliza married her step-brother James Fort in 1916, and died in 1976..
George married Theresa McWilliams in 1933, and died in 1950.
Catherine married Matthew Preece in 1919, and died in 1959

I would guess that Jane's father's name was Hargreaves, and Bessie's father was Hooper - but could well be wrong!

Thanks.

I didnt notice that George wasnt her father...it was someone called Arthur! hence why we would not be DNA matched.... makes sense there!

Dell boys head must be spinning with all this information. Bad enough when it is your own reasonably near family.

Have Zita or Lawrence got any descendants that could be asked to do a dna test? This could help eliminate some of the matches. I don’t know who you both tested with but Ancestry now splits the results into two - your parents lines.

Jane’s father was NOT George Sparks. He died well over a year before her birth.

That rules out any possibility of your being related by blood to George McVay's granddaughter

Also, read the notes added by the vicar on her baptism record, which I posted yesterday

Don’t worry too much about not matching your dna. I get matches that I share with a first cousin and / or her daughter that don’t match with my brother.

And yes, he is my full brother ;-)

It is all down to the unequal amounts of dna we inherit.

Delboy1978

Delboy1978 Report 19 Feb 2023 19:33

Jane Sparks father George Sparks was the illegitimate son of her grand mother Catherine Sparks.

Catherine Sparks brother Frederick Sparks is my 3 x Great Grandfather.

their parents are both our 4 x Great Grand Parents: George Sparks 1810 and Ellen Pedlow 1809

ErikaH Report 19 Feb 2023 19:07

Who is the person with whom you think you share a heritage with George’s granddaughter?

Delboy1978

Delboy1978 Report 19 Feb 2023 18:51

She has come back to say it was wrong the date of death and it was 1984.

She has taken a DNA test but we dont appear to be a match which we should do as we share GGG grandparents. the family do not appear to know much about George's mother other than her name.

She is going to get his birth certificate to see who his mother is, i got a sense there is doubt about it. It might be George was adopted by Jane unofficially and the McVey on his birth cert might be a relative of her husband who had a child and she took her on. That may explain why we dont match DNA wise. Just guessing

Delboy1978

Delboy1978 Report 19 Feb 2023 17:34

I got that death date from my 5th cousin who is Georges grand daughter. I will see where she got it from.

If, as expected, the birth certificate doesn’t give the fathers name the next step to consider is a DNA test which might give some clues.
