Trying to find out where Frederick was after 1911, found he was married to Emma Alderton in 1892 and had an adopted daughter Mabel. I then found out that Emma had married Joseph Beasley/ Beesley in Sheffield area in 1906 and had a daughter Rosie. Emma was still married to Frederick, but didn't know if he was alive or dead at time of 2nd marriage.( Newspaper article) Frederick is in 1911 living with his brother as a lodger in Plough Inn Bury St Edmunds, but I can't find where he is in 1921 census. I think he died in 1936. Thank you for your help.

It was difficult for the ‘ordinary working man’ to afford divorce. The Beasley marriage certificate and the 1936 death certificate may answer some questions.

you mentioned a newspaper article which (if I understood correctly) said Emma didn't know if Frederick was alive or dead at the time of the Beesley marriage.

Which newspaper, and date, please?

MATRIMONIAL TROUBLES. BEIGHTON AND MOSBRO' CASES DISMISSED

MOSBRO' CASES DISMISSED. There were two applications for separation and maintenance orders at the Eckington Petty Sessions on Monday. The first was that of Emma Beasley against a Beighton miner named Joseph Beasley, and was a somewhat unusual case. Mr W Tottle (Eckingt on ) defended in both cases. Complainant said that her husband had turned her out because she reproved his daughter for dirty habits a month ago, and he told her that his daughter was his wife. Cornplainant had to sleep in an outbuilding for that night till four o'clock in the morning, when she got into the house through a window. The following day she had to get out of his way as he threatened her.
By Mr Tottle: She had been married before, but she could not swear whether her husband, whose name was Purt. was alive or not.
Mr Tottle: When did you last see him?
Complainant: On the 22nd of September, 1901, and that man (the defendant) knew he was alive when he put the ring on my finger.
Have you had any correspondence with your husband since then?
—No. When did you marry this man
—ln 1906.
Didn't you know that you were not a spinster?
—l knew that I was a married woman.
Why did you call yourself a spinster in this marriage certificate?
—That man (defendant) put me up to it.
Further replying to questions, complainant admitted that she wrote a letter to her niece in March, 1907, From Mrs E. Purt, care of Mrs Beasley, in which it said: I want you to do me a kindness: write and tell me where your uncle Fred is. She admitted that the person referred to was her husband.
Mr Tottle: So you had doubt as to whether he was alive or dead?
Complainant: I wrote to see if he was alive or dead, but he (the defendant) pulled the letter off the table and it never got sent,.
So there is a considerable doubt as to whether you are the defendant's wife or not?— l can't say.
Lydia Herberts, a neighbour, gave evidence for the complainant, who was then re-called, and in answer to the Magistrates' Clerk, said that she was married to the defendant in March, 1906, and at that time did not know if her husband was alive or dead.
Robert Anderton, complainant's brother, said it was seven or eight years since he last saw his sister's husband, this being at Bury St. Edmunds.
The Bench dismissed the case..
