Find Ancestors

Hi, I have an Arthur Malin born around 1885 who married my great Aunt Lavinia Ames on May 30, 1907. They had a daughter Lilian, who was born in 1908. The Malin family started the first Fish and Chip shops in the UK, and am looking for any other children and descendants they may have had as I don't have access to the 1921 census, only the 1911 and that only shows Lilian. I hope someone can assist me, please

The 1911 - as you say only Lilian showing. Checking the original shows that Arthur and Lavinia had been married for 4 years and confirms that they had had one child born alive who is still alive.

Several Edith Malin marriages up to 1961, but only 1 with initial C - so a possibility. You would need the marriage certificate to confirm second name and Father's name and/or birth certificate which would confirm DOB.

A Q4 birth reg. would "fit" a September birth as 6 weeks was allowed in which to register a birth

Looks like Doris married a further twice - first to SEAR and then PYKE (not Pyute - bad transcription). Thomas may already be in the forces and so not registered at home.

Possibly 2 children by 1939, (closed records) but info. withheld due to 100 year rule. You can search these records yourself

As Patricia's details are "open" on the register, it indicates that she has died. She married a second time to SAWYER. The surname change was noted on the register on 4.7.1955 - not necessarily the date of the marriage but only when the change was made.

Thanks everyone for this information its much appreciated. I would like help now with Brothers etc of my Great Uncle Arthur Malin who is mentioned above.

Look for Arthur on the various census.

Use the freebmd site mentioned earlier

Try the sister sites of freereg.org.uk and freecen.org.uk

Find Arthur's birth registration on the GRO site then look for siblings using the two surnames.

You refer to him as your great uncle - therefore one of his siblings must have been your grandparent

Much more fun for you to find things for yourself as far as possible

You do have to register with the GRO but it IS free. You may already have done this if you have purchased certificates as suggested.

As he was born before Q4 1911 you'll need to use the GRO site to find his Mother's maiden name.

You can then check for other births with the same combination of names and look for a marriage of the parents.

The 1911 census for the family says married 44 years with 18 children born, of which 9 have died!
