Received death certificate for Julia Baldock today.
Very little by way of info.

Sadly I am feeling now, VERY strongly, that this is MY Julia. - you know, you get a "feeling" and I sure have it seeing this now.

Makes me so sad. Age 42 and having dementia - which could also mean just being "demented" and not how we think of dementia these days.

So, my search for Julia comes to an end.

Thank you all SO much, genuinly I am beyond grateful for all your suggestions, directions and advice. I've said it before and I'll say it again, this community is amazing.

Sometimes people do just seem to disappear - for instance my great-aunt Edith, who disappears from records after 1911.
But I know from family stories that she was definitely still around in the 1920s-30s.
I have no idea where or when she died.
So frustrating!

ErikaH….I’ve just ordered the death certificate for Julia Baldock who died in Godstone 1910. Fingers crossed!!

I have bought lots of other certs, my family is HUGE, my husbands also seems quite large.

I’ve finished my dads side, my mums side, my husbands maternal parents side and this is his paternal side. Worst bit is there is no one left from hubbys side of the generation who might be able to offer some memories.

From my sister, I only have my mum and she’s 101 and the memories have very much faded. Grateful we did her side earlier.

Will wait for the certificate to come and let you know the outcome.

Even if further info is found relating to Julia who was the mother of Florence, there is no absolute proof that she is the woman who married Pooley.

Available records would seem to suggest that she could be, but............................

I have to say that if I'd been researching a particular individual for 30 years, I'd have bought some certs by now ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-)

If it's the right death cert, it may mention either Harry or George, and solve the mystery for you.

The informant's name may be helpful, too - though of course that may only be some hospital official.

You are, of course, absolutely right. She couldn’t possibly have died in 1898 as she was on 1901 census, I am a fool?????

Just something about the 1910 Godstone death isn’t sitting comfortably with me. Cant put my finger on it yet. It will probably turn out to be her!

I haven’t got the death certificate yet as I can’t see that what it might say may be of any help.

How could that 34-year old's death be hers? The woman you're researching is on 1901 census

Reason I like better is that, apart from being born there, she doesn’t seem to have any other connection to Guildford or Surrey. Her parents and older sister were all born in Berks and seems she was only born in Surrey due to being where her father was working at the time.

A connection to Islington feels better to me as that area Camberwell/Islington/Bermondsey are all within close proximity.

Did you ever get a copy of the 1910 death cert of a Julia Baldock in Godstone?

I know the age isn't quite right, but that depends on the informant's knowledge or belief.

And after all, the 1901 census says she's 30 , which isn't correct either - so don't be too hung up on age.

Thank you for stopping me from making a BIG mistake.

I have searched and can find no remarriage of MY George William POOLEY so I am not going to assume he remarried.

My search for Julia has given me quite a lot of info not just dates but feel I am getting to know her too. Her youngest daughter, Florence Julia was a tiny lady, under 5’ tall and my husband adored his “nanny Flo” as she was known. She was an incredibly tough lady but, looking at her history, it’s easy to see why.

Seeing so much hardship and struggle brings home even more how very blessed my life has been.

Thank you so much for your help. As I have said, although I’ve been trying to trace family for nearly 30 years, I am very much the novice as I dip in and out when I can find a few hours here and there.

Please say why you think that the man Pooley who married Elizabeth Taylor in 1882 is the same as the one who married Julia Stevens in 1884

Oh she has not made life easy for sure.

What I have managed to link up is that she was born in Guildford, family had previously moved from Berkshire.

They move to Lambeth.

In 1884 Julia falls pregnant and has to marry George POOLEY. Their son George is born 6 months later. Another son, Edgar, follows in 1885.

In 1888 Julia’s sister Lucy marries a James Woodbine

Between 1885 and 1887 Julia and George have separated. - George’s son with new lady Elizabeth, (Stephen) is born 1887c

Also 1891, Julia and George’s 2 sons are in their grandparents home, at least for the night of the census. Their place of birth is given as Old Kent Road.

Also 1891, Julia has adopted the name of Baldock and is living in 2 rooms at 49 Coopers Rd, Camberwell. She does not appear to have an occupation. This is just off the old Kent road where Harry Baldock is working in a pub, literally couple hundred yards away. They are apart for census night though.

In 1892 both of Julia’s sons are baptised, address is given as 20 Peartree street which is also the grandparents address.

On 1901 census, Edgar POOLEY, Julia and George’s younger son is living with his aunts family. This is Julia’s sister Lucy now Lucy Woodbine.

It all follows through. Even have Julia and Lucy in the workhouse together in 1875 when the family were living at 49 Bland Street - same address is on census for 1891.

I’m almost certain she did pass away before 1911, but this is still an ongoing search. There is a Julia Stevens who dies in Godalming in 1910 but there is nothing else so I can’t be sure it’s her. There are certainly no Julia Baldocks deaths anywhere. I am still searching but, for now, I am pretty good with all that has come together with other members playing a huge part in helping.

As she didn't marry Baldock, you really have very little hope of proving who she was, sorry to say.
