In the 1911 census, Clara is with her parents George & Alice Appleton.
Clara has 2 children
Alice E Haggerty b1899 Dover
Minnie Ada E haggerty b 1901 Woolwich

It shows on the household that Clara is married and gives the year as 1898 but for the life of me I cannot find that marriage. I looked on Genes, Family.search free BMD.

William was a Soldier Gunner Ryl Artillery. on the 1901 census

I tried various spellings of Haggerty/Haggarty/Hagerty/Hagartay but cannot find the marriage.

Anyone able to try and find the marriage for me please

Just for info he was 1 of 5 children. First 3 were born in Gibraltar as his parents were there for 5 years, William and Emily were both born in Kent. But his parents were also born in uk.

Perhaps they didn't marry? Maybe they had only been together since 1898, and said they were married for respectability.

William and Clara appear to have separated.
In 1911 he's with another "wife" Rosina Frances (formerly Evans; nee Marlow), whom he didn't marry until 1914 - and a "daughter" Lilian.
He's claiming to have been married for 10 years, which isn't true .

Confusingly, Rosina's first marriage was in 1898:

Does the Census identify which Battalion he was serving?
It would make it easier to try to find his service record (which may include marriage details) in the National Archives website

The 1901 military census record for William clearly records him as SINGLE

He would have required Army permission to marry

At the barracks in 1901 it says his father is Charles Milne???That has confused me!

So he was a bit of a "toe rag", leaving Clara, marrying someone else and was he actually married in the first place?

The mention of Charles Milne in 1901 is a mistranscription.

For some reason, the enumerator has listed most of the many soldiers, including Charles Milne, (aged 24, born Scotland) as "son".

Goodness knows why the transcriber picked on Charles Milne as the "father" of William .

1901 (with Clara), 1901 at Barracks, and 1911, all say William was born in Camberley.

Farnham reg district would have included Camberley.
There's no William G Heggarty (or other spelling) born in Kent, 1870-80.

ADDED:
1891 and 1881 say Sandhurst.
Sandhurst is about 2.5 miles from Camberley.

OP says born Kent, which is obviously just an error by the poster

But in 1901 census he is with his wife Clara and the 2 children so although it says wife, he must have lied but she gives her name as Clara Haggerty???

The reason I put Kent was because it put London, Kent but also Plumstead, london ,Kent. I personally wouldn't put London in Kent, it wasn't when I lived in Kent!

He chopped and changed his mind like the weather! But in the end he was buried in Kent,

Re 1901 -
yes, Clara would have used William's surname for respectability.
They were living as husband and wife, and the children's births were registered under the name Haggerty.

Clara kept the name Haggerty for the rest of her life.

London and Plumstead were where they were living, not where William was born.

Just to add -
In 1921, William is in Gillingham, Kent, where he died in 1922.
In 1921, he's with Rosina; Rosina's daughter Lilian; his own daughter Minnie;
Kathleen 1912 ( his daughter with Rosina); and a sixth person whose surname apparently isn't Haggerty. (Don't have sub to see who it is.)

Good to see that he kept in touch with at least some of his first family.
