Arthur, as you say this is a very old posting, and Christine might not see your reply - she has only ever posted on here 4 times!

Hello Christine. It's a long time since you posted your query, so maybe this is not as silly question as it might seem; but I must ask: have I replied to this Provan inquiry already?

Alexander Provan and Mary Grindlay are ancestors of mine too. Their daughter Helen (Ellen) born about 1819/20 in New Monkland married Alexander Gardner. The latter 2 are 2 of my gtx2 grandparents. I have a fairly satisfactory line with the Provans back to Kilsyth Parish, and for the Grindlays back to Falkirk Parish (the landward part). Both lines were of farming stock.

Your Alexander's eldest brother Andrew was manager of a farm in Old Monkland, and another brother Walter was the progenitor of a line that had a lucrative retail business in Glasgow.

Was your Alexander the one who had a pub in Anderston, Glasgow, or was that his brother Charles? I believe there may also be a connection with Stewarton in Ayrshire.

I am trying to find any ancestors of Mary Grindlay who was married to Alexander Provan they had a son Alexander Provan who was born in new monkland 1822 or around that date in lanarkshire Scotland Thankyou for any help you can give me in tracing these names
