Hi, my name is Paula, I'm trying to find relatives on my mum's side. Her father was called JOHN FRANCIS STEWARD. John married a lady called FLORENCE MARY ALLON in MANCHESTER in 1934. They had 3 children, MARY, BERNARD & PATRICIA. John's father was called JAMES & his mother was called SARAH JANE STEWARD nee REVINGTON.James & Sarah had 5 sons, CHARLIE, TOMMY, JIM, BILL & JOHN (my grandad). They had I think 4 daughters, KATH, ANNE, MARY, & MAGGIE. As far as I know my grandad & his brothers & sisters were born in CLAYTON MANCHESTER. Patricia is my mother. Any info would be helpful.

Hi, thanks for the info. I have a challenge on my hands. I am trying to find a way back to Mary Queen of Scots as I have been told from my mother that her dad, John Francis Steward had told her that we are related to Mary Queen of Scots so now I am trying to find this info out. Hoping that someone could help me.
Thanks Paula

so that means that you are a descendant of James VI or Scotland (James 1 of England) :-D

he was her only child!

and, unlike a man, she could not have any unknown bastards!

so that means you have to work backwards from your grandfather.

You could also google Mary Queen of Scots, there's several versions of her family tree on the internet.

I'm curious ..................

did you not get any responses to this posting, or any of the others you've just raised, back in 2006/7???

At that time, the responses would have been sent as a pm to your message box on GR, and GR would then have notified you by email that there were messages waiting.

There were always lots of us waiting to work on these requests!

Paula/Kevin

In the 6 years since you posted this request, have you tried doing any research?

I have been looking on different sites but not had much luck with very little info. To view a lot of the records you have to subscribe.

To go back to Mary will require a lot of Scottish research. My paternal paternal line come from Shetland. Because of the way Shetland became a part of Scotland and how it was ruled, there is a big link back to the Stewart kings. In Shetland many years ago was a gentleman who spent a lot of time researching in various record offices. Whatever he found, he presented to the relevant family in a short or long handwritten document. I have seen several of them given to my family on the island of Whalsay. I have a cousin who was given a document listing her ancestors and showing her as a 24th direct descendant of Robert The Bruce via the Stewarts and Bruces. Given that on my island everyone is related so many different ways my line is entwined with hers. The Steward surname came, I was told from one of their kinsman who was called 'Walter The Steward'.

If you want to prove your descent, it is going to take some really hard work, probably in person in Edinburgh. There may be enough documentation to prove it but don't set yourself up to be disappointed. If you just simply want to enjoy learning about the Bruces and Stewarts, see what you can read about Earl Patrick Stewart and his family. He is one of my lot.

Family 'stories' are often just that.

So don't be disappointed if it turns out to have been a fabrication.

If you are serious about researching your line, you will not be able to do it without some expenditure.

The sites I gave you are FREE - try them

The only thing I do know about Richard Steward is that he went to India, he married a lady in India but don't know if she was from India or England. I got this info off my mum as she has a letter from Richard & at one stage wanted to take her to live in India but my grandparents wouldn't allow it. My mum was born in 1938. I know the letter exists as I have seen it. I'll have to see if my mum can tell me anymore info as to when he went to India & by what means. Thanks for any help on this :-)
