Rachel, all the children that where born in Carlisle where registered in Carlisle, all i can find for Margaret is 1891 but it says Whiehaven Cumberland, its a a good 5 years after her birth year, and also for John born after her all i can find is 1889(which is right) but its registered in Bootle Cul Cumberland, have i not found the right two? The twins were born after these two and and they are registered in Carlisle as is Kate...they are both in the 1901 cencus so they didnt die. Kaz

Don't forget that on certificates, where a X is signed, its because the person couldn't write their name. Rachel

I think this is Margaret's birth. I know on the census it shows Margaret L Riley - she could have been known as Margaret Lizzie when her full name is Margaret Elizabeth Name: Margaret Elizabeth Riley Year of Registration: 1885 Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec District: Carlisle County: Cumbria, Cumberland Volume: 10b Page: 490 (click to see others on page) Regards Rachel

Here is John's birth Name: John Patrick Riley Year of Registration: 1888 Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun District: Carlisle County: Cumbria, Cumberland Volume: 10b Page: 517 (click to see others on page) I know the year of birth looks wrong - however, its the only John P Riley born in Carlisle in the 1880's. Don't forget that not everyone told the truth about their ages (or those of their children). If you wanted to make sure this is the correct John Riley, you can ask to make sure that the mother's name is Ellen and the father is John. Regards Rachel

I have Thomas's marriage cert and it says he was 30 when he got married, i have him in the 1891 cencus but not in the 1901 think i know why, found a Thomas Riley in another 1891 cencus age 26 and he was in prison in Newcastle, occ steam engine maker fitter( pos done while in prison), maybe this is why he married so late??? And this is where he was originally born...grandparents may have still been there..

Kaz, I used Ancestry; and find that sometimes it works best if I type in the person's name on the first screen, and then select which type of record I'm interested in (Census or BMD). Don't forget that in the 1880's when people wanted to get married, they had to save their money, so they usually got a trade, then saved before getting married. It was fortunate if you married when you were 16 - it depended on your income and how much you had saved. Regards Rachel

Rachel Report 17 Apr 2007 14:51

Hi Kaz, Not sure if the Thomas in 1891 in Barrow is yours - you said that he was 30 when he married. If he was born in 1874 (as per the birth certificate), then he would marry in 1904. Its possible that he married in 1890 when he was 16 (he would need parental consent); the wife died, and then he married again when he was 30. What is the name of Thomas' wife on his marriage certificate? Regards Rachel

kaz

kaz Report 17 Apr 2007 16:48

Hi Rachel, yes on his marriage certificate it says that he is 30 and his wife is 21, his wifes name is Dora Leathead, name change as on their daughters birth certificate it is Leathart, Thomas and Dora married on 29/July 1907, they had a son a month later, John, then my gran Dora in 1908 and then 5 more after that. The Thomas is Furness is the only one i can find that may fit,hes just disappeared from 1891-1907.Still havnt worked out if its him in the A M prison in Newcastle aged 26 in 1901 cencus. Regards Kaz

Rachel Report 17 Apr 2007 16:59

Hi Kaz, See what you mean about Thomas. I have found his and Dora's marriage entry - on Ancestry it states Dona not Dora. Anyway, they were married in the Tynemouth area of Northumberland. So, its possible that Thomas was living in this area before he married. Will now look to see if Thomas is on the 1901 census living in Tynemouth. Regards Rachel
