Hi Zoe - it says 18 Argyle Street (which is now I believe the Alhambra Hotel!) - 54 bedrooms - it also said housmaid. I was told by someone on GR that there were no electoral registers until 1927 so I didn't think it possible to do this. He was 'taken-in' by a lady and brought up as hers - I am currently researching her tree to try and trace the Pike's as there must be a connection. I feel I am getting close, but she's been just as difficult to find. I have her details but don't want to post them on line.

Linda On the 1901 census can only find 2 Violet Pikes in the London area, do you have a house number for the address in 1916 if so you should see if you can get a electoral roll lookup for that address and see who lives there it may shed some light on the situation! Zoe

I would love some ideas or help to solve the mystery of my Mother's parentage. There is no birth record at the GRO of GLADYS DARK b 1905, so her parentage and place of birth are unknown. There is a attendance record (1912-1917) from a village school in North Devon when she was 'fostered' by the WISE family. In 1917 she was sent to live with an 'uncle' in North London and married in 1930. It is possible that her mother's name was SARAH DARK & fathers name JAMES? - he appears on her marriage certificate as occupationTailor(deceased). I have been hitting brick walls for the past 7 years, trying lots of variations and searches. My latest research is about SARAH ANN DARK(E) b1872 Woolfardistry Devon - I have traced her as far as 1891 census, employed by Charles CATER 47 Northolt Mount Estate Corran (Uxbridge Middx). In 1881 she was living in EDGE MILL, LITTLEHAM, Devon - the same village that my Mother was 'fostered'. I have found an entry that might possibly be the same SARAH DARK (wrongly transcribed as WARK) in the 1901 census, living at 22 Avenue Road Hampstead Middx, and working in the Household of a Russian born actress. I have not found any marriage for SARAH ANN DARK(E) and wonder if this could be a match, and could possibly explain the connection between Littleham and N London. Any help or ideas to solve my mystery would be much appreciated. Thank you Joan

Zoe I hope you can help - I have a birth certificate St Marylebone 1916 and the mother's name is Violet Florence Pike - no father's name - of Argyle Street, Kings Cross - Birth at Queen Charlotte's Hospital - Baptism cert just says Violet Pike (mother) - question is quite simple, who is she? Answer difficult (beginning to think impossible)!? Unfortunately 50% of my family is missing until I find out. Linda

Helen The only way to trace forward is to do the long task of going through the BMD's free on ancestry at the moment and looking for a person who fits what you are looking for! It is very hard to trace forward if you ask on the main board others maybe able to help more than I. Zoe

Hi Zoe I sent for the birth certificate of my mums brother he was born in 1917 George Albert Redfern, last seen in about 1931 in Burton-on-trent . Where do you start searching, when you know nothing about him, have tried on this site but no one seems to have him in there tree,How can you find out where he went to ?. or if he has died .? If you go on the sites for birth deaths and marriages do you have to have the year or place they died? Regards Helen

Hi Zoe, Thanks for offering to help. Can you help with the following please. I have my Great grandfather Joseph Bellas b c 1859 Liverpool married to Georgina White b c 1869 Liverpool, marriage date Dec Qtr 1892 Liverpool. My grandmother was Elizabeth b c 1885 Liverpool. This info is from the 1901 census. In the 1891 census, i have a Joseph Bellas b c 1859 Liverpool married to Annie b c 1859 Liverpool with a daughter Elizabeth b c 1885. Could this be the same father and daughter, but different wives? Any help you give would be appreciated. Thanks again for your time. Jean

Denise I know if you goto a LDS family centre you can order the films in there for a small price..I know this is the case at the Hyde park family history centre in London..the people who work there are very helpful too. Always love a mystery maybe I can be more help on others. Zoe

Zoe, When I was doing research 20+ years ago, because I was going to LDS Family Centers and having to order in the films, I went through and copied all of the surnames of interest at that time. William was not among them. I think I will need to go again and try to find him. I did come up with the names and dates you already have, but didn't know if that is enough to go in, or does one have to get more definitive proof to say that a specific family is an ancestor. I was able to find Henry on the later census, so that is ok. I'm just trying to go back further. On another question, using the IGI can someone order the particular microfilm from the batch number to see the other details, (if any), on a parish record? Thanks so much for the input on this one. When/if you have time I have a few more mysteries. Thanks again for all your trouble and help. Denise

John Where did the marriage take place who were the witnesses as this may help. What were all the details it may be worth doing a electoral roll lookup at the addresses given! Sometimes they do fib on certs & census ~ alot in my family some don't seem to know their names and ages according to different events that happen...LOL It is very possible it is him, he is the only one I can see also Zoe

No probs Zoe, your time and effort is much appreciated,, I appear to be drawing a blank as well, on the 1871.81. and 91 her birthplace is shown as 3 diff towns but they are all the same area so I am guessing that the borders changed slightly with each census,, just to make our search even harder Thanks again for your help Nic x
