Sorry about that Ellen brains not working again .His father Charles is down as being a farmer ,When Thomas got married in 1903 he was living at Mill Farm. Can't work out the mothers madian name . Catherine

Ellen

Ellen Report 29 Aug 2005 13:06

Catherine I'm not going to find him on the 1881 if he was born in 1884. His parents may not even have been married in 1881. There are a number of Charles Forrests who could be contenders for his father, but would need more info to narrow it down. eg. what was his father Charles' occupation on the marraige cert? Regards Ellen.

Thanks for looking Ellen, thought it was a long shot. Amazed there were none in Ayrshire, although if she had gone up to Glasgow in 1871 there must have been rellies nearby one would have thought. Are there a lot of them around Glasgow? Gloria x

Ellen

Ellen Report 28 Aug 2005 13:27

Hi Gloria No Merchants/Marchants at all in or from Ayrshire on the 1881. There are not loads at all. There's a small concentration of them around Pollockshaws, then Renfrewshire, and Glasgow, who seem to originate from Ireland. One example below: Dwelling: 24 Wallace St Census Place: Rutherglen, Lanark, Scotland Source: FHL Film 0203703 GRO Ref Volume 654 EnumDist 7 Page 12 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Ann MERCHANT W 60 F Ireland Rel: Head Occ: Out Door Worker Margaret MERCHANT U 27 F Pollockshaws, Renfrew, Scotland Rel: Daur Occ: Laundress James MERCHANT U 22 M Pollockshaws, Renfrew, Scotland Rel: Son Occ: Coal Miner Annie MERCHANT U 20 F Pollockshaws, Renfrew, Scotland Rel: Daur Occ: Cotton Weaver No sign of your Jane Yates nee Merchant on the 1881, sorry. Regards Ellen.
