Wife Mary (b approx 1830) Daughter Martha b 28/05/1856 Elland Should be residing Westgate, Elland (West Riding between Halifax and Huddersfield) Brearley normally mis-spelt! Hi Sue I posted this message on here the other day Got a bit of a conundrum here! I have this family in 1871 John Mann 56 Head b.Hull, Yorks Mary Mann 46 Wife b. Hull Irwin Mann 11 Son b. Hull Mary Mann 7 Dau b. Hull Dwelling : 25 ? House Row, Sutton, Hull Looking at the 1881 census there is another son, John, born c1852. I believe Irwin is my 2x great Grandfather. Only problem is in 1881 he is calling himself Irwin Hales. He married Jane A Gawthorpe and they had Mary Elizabeth Hale in 1885 (I have the birth cert). In 1891 Irwin and his family are back to being called Mann again. Mary Hale married James Uscroft in 1913 (I have the cert and fathers name is Irwin Hale) and had my Grandad in 1917, Irwin Uscroft (named after his Grandfather). Grandad told me that his Dad used to call his Mum Polly Mann - he had no idea why. When Grandad told me this I thought he meant man as in a bloke! lol. But obviously there were other reasons. Does anybody have the 1861 or 1851 census to see if there were any other children for John and Mary Mann? I am thinking along the lines of daughters illegitimate son or something like. Gillian Lighton kindly had a look on the 1851 for me but couldn't find them at that address. Could you possibly have a look on the 1861 for me? Many Thanks Jeanette x

Hi Sue, could I trouble you for another lookup... (in 1861) John Fitzsimons (b.1820 Whitehaven,Cumberland) living in Kimberworth. In 1871, he's at 46 Saw? Orchard Street. He should have around 3 kids - Joseph (b.1857), Elizabeth (b.1859) and James (b.1861). Not sure who his wife is as he re-married in 1867. Thanks again :) Got another one... Mary Sagar (b.1833) and daughter Hannah (b.1859). In 1871, they're living in Ecclesfield - Chapel Brow?. Don't know her husband's name as he died before the census.

Helen Report 5 Jan 2005 13:41

Hi Sue, thank you very much for your kind offer. If you have a chance could you please see if you can find any record of William Bilbrough Bradley, born York 1842 or his parents David Bradley born c1818 and Mary. I have the censuses for 1881 and 1901 which show William, his wife Sarah and children (Ada, Mary, Laura and Charles) living in Clifton Green, York but no house number is given. William appears to have worked at the Station Hotel York for a number of years. Thank you for any records from earlier censuses you may be able to find. Kind regards Helen
