Jill in the East Kent,

I had already tried the 'watermen + lightermen site' but I can never seem to bring up many results.

Maybe I am not using it properly?

I would just like to say a BIG BIG THANK YOU to everybody especially Dea & Ivy for all your help. I have come to the conclusion that some people are not meant to be found and one of them is Eliza. I think that before she got married she may have used a different name and possible where she came from! I thought being that the surname “Royce” was not a common name it would be easy to find. Never mind it is now time to move on.

I will now concentrate on her husband line as I have a few clues on another thread to follow.

May I ask one more thing from anyone could they have a look up for me on the birth index of Eliza husband……..

Joseph Charles Bennett
c1849
Whitechapel or Spitalfields (London)

Father’s Name Joseph Bennett
Mothers Name possible Helen or Ellen

Many many thanks again.

Hi Dea

Sorry I thought this one was going to be easier. I had a look on the free BMD - lots of Joseph Bennetts but none born in or around Whitechapel.

The only one I could find was Dec 1848 in Marylebone but I couldn't relate this to any of his siblings and I don't know how far away Marylebone is from Whitechapel?

Will let you know what I find

Hi Dea and Sylvia

I too struggled to get info from the watermen and lightermen site, but I happened on this site:

http://www.parishregister.com/newsletters/0207b.html

and

http://www.parishregister.com/searchpage.asp

- I'm not sure whether this is the one that Jill was recommending or not, but it does mention lightermen.

If you search for Bennetts (see second webaddress above) in those parishes that cover the right decade, there are results, produced like this:

Mile End 1841 to 1884
Charles Bennett, Charlotte Elizabeth Bennett, Eliza Bennett, James Bennett, John Bennett, Jonathan George Sescious Bennett, Mary Ann Bennett, Sarah Jane Bennett, William Bennett

1842 to 1865 Whitechapel St Mary
Albert Edmund Robert Bennett, Eliza Bennett, Ellen Bennett, Ellen Martha Bennett, Ellen Sarah Bennett, Emma Elizabeth Bennett, Harriet Ann Bennett, Jane Bennett, John Bennett, Matilda Bennett, Robert Edward Bennett, Rosina Bennett, Sarah Ann Bennett, Sarah Esther Bennett, Sarah Jane Bennett, Thomas Bennett, Thomas Henry Bennett, Walter George Bennett, William James Bennett
(NB Did Jill say this parish is on the IGI? I see that a Matilda is included in this list)

1840 to 1876 St Thomas Stepney
Alfred Edwin Bennett, Caroline Elizabeth Bennett, Charles Simpson Bennett, Edward James Bennett, Elizabeth Bennett, Emily Bennett, George John Bennett, Henry Bennett, John James Bennett, Kate Marianne Bennett, Louisa Bennett, Margaret Eleanor Bennett, Richard William Bennett, Sarah Ann Bennett, Susannah Bennett, William Bennett, William Elvis Bennett, William James Bennett

They are then pay to view for the detailed entries (or, presumably, a trip to LMA?)

I can't find Joseph's birth registration either. Could it be registered late? There is a Joseph Charles birth registered in the Bethnal Green reg dist in Sept 1854 (1c 309).

LadyoftheForest Report 21 Feb 2008 12:28

On the 1881 census I can see that Joseph Bennett has a brother called Richard age 22.

I have found a birth index for.....

Richard George Bennett
Stepney Q Sep 1860
1c 479

and was wondering whether to order that. At least it might prove that their parents are Richard & Helen Bennett and give me the mothers surname.

Any thoughts

Marylebone to Whitechapel is about 10 miles.

Ivy Report 21 Feb 2008 13:24

Hi All,

I can find Joseph and (h)el(l)en with their children in 1861 and 1871. There are also older children Ellen and Matilda with them in 1861.

I can see that there is a marriage of Joseph to Ellen Ray in the 1840s, but I can't find the family in 1851 to establish where to look for Joseph's birth/baptism. Although he later stated Whitechapel, that is perhaps just where he was living at the age of 12 in 1861. In 1861 he and John (b abt 1851) are said to have been born in Spitalfields, unlike the later siblings.

Is it possible that Ellen is a second wife?

Dea

Dea Report 21 Feb 2008 13:48

My thoughts exactly Ivy but I can't find anything to prove it.

Matilda was certainly registered as a Bennet in 1847 and Joseph married Ellen Ray in April 1841 so we should find them on 1841 census also ?

This is all quite baffling!

Dea Report 21 Feb 2008 13:58

I am also trying a different tack to link up with the Bennet's

Do you remember the witnesses on the marriage cert - Daniel Tenison + Eliza.(nee Gill)

Well, - I believe Eliza's parents were William Gill + Eliza Bennett - married 23 April 1848 at St. Pancras.

This would seem to be confirmed by William + Eliza both 32 + family in Islington on 1861.

They have with them sister in law Sarah Bennett.

However, once again, I cannot follow them backwards for certain as they all seem to go missing !

See what you can find - I will keep looking.
