I start with the letters I can read - for instance, head, son, wife, mar, unm, single, parish where they are living - lots will be born there - and have a look to see how consistent each letter is - and then try to read everything else that the enumerator has written before attempting to read what he has put about my family - sometimes it becomes clear, sometimes not. Also, see how Ancestry and FindMyPast have each transcribed the info. Cross-check siblings names against the BMD info - the registrar's clerks tended to be tidier and more careful with names and with their writing.

Hi Ginny,

One branch comes to halt in 1845 (born Dublin, father's name on marriage certificate, but no trace of any other family); the rest are around 1780s ish.

I'm unhappy about parish register links (although there is a possible trail on one branch back to the 1590s) since I picked the wrong John to follow in the 1780s (sorted out when I checked against wills). 90% are ALs, with no wills found....I'm unconvinced by elderly parents' claims to the child on the census when there is a teenage daughter at home ... also, travelling to ROs is out the question for me these days ... I find the lack of info associated with names on a tree before 1780s means it just seems like lists - much more interesting to trace siblings sideways with the census - anyway, these are my excuses for not tracing further back!

Thank you Ivy.. Do you mind me asking how far back have you managed to trace your tree???

This birth

Births Sep 1902
Phillips Ruth Greenwich 1d 1111

Corresponds with this death:

Ruth Jagger b 2 July 1902 Hertford/W10 0399

and the area matches the marriage location.

Jagger and Kezia are fairly rare names, so you can fairly quickly decide whether census listings refer to your ancestors. Unfortunately, Phillips is not a rare name at all.

To progress the Phillips side, you will need Ruth's father's name. If you purchase the marriage certificate below (£7 from GRO website if you have the reference details) it may well give you her age, her father's name, and his occupation:

Groom: Charles G Jagger
Bride's surname: Phillips
Registration district: Greenwich
Quarter: Jul-Sep 1929
References - vol 1d, page 2425

Website address to order the certificate:
