Teresa With Irish Blood in Me Veins

Teresa With Irish Blood in Me Veins Report 14 Jan 2009 18:14

I have a Book on IRISH SURNAMES and their origins if anyone wants any information just add your SURNAME on here and I will see what I can find.

Be patient though, as it's not strictly in alphabetical order!

OR...you can go to this website and see some of them for yourselves. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irishsurnames/

Hope this helps.

Andrea...Here we go.....

ARMSTRONG is an example of an English name found in Ireland, particularly in Ulster, Northern Ireland. Due to the translation of the old Irish family names into English, it may well be of older Irish origins as well. LAVERY and TRAYNOR are 2 names which have been translated from their original gaelic into the English name of ARMSTRONG.

In the17TH century ARMSTRONG was a principal name of the county of Fermanagh, also in Leitrim and Sligo. Spelt as ARMSTRONGE in Tipperary.

In the 1890 birth index the nae is found in Antrim, Fermanagh, Cavan and Tyrone. (Total of 140 births)

Arms for several families of the name can be found in the Irish Book of Arms.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
O’ BRACKEN, BRAKEN
Both names of BRACKANE and BRACKEN were found as principal names of Kings Co. (Offaly) in the census of 1659. The name is given in that County and in Dublin in subsequent records.
The name stems from O’Breacain, of possible Irish origins and is found centered in Tullamore, Co. Offaly in more modern times and in Kildare.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

MAC CARTHY: Carthy: Mc Arthy: McCARTHY: Macarthy.
Mac Carthy is one of the top 12 names in the Country. An ancient and powerful Sept (Clan), the family name is the third most numerous in Cork overall.
McCarthy Castles and monuments are well known…..Muckross estates in Kerry, Blarney Castle in Cork, and Cormacs Chapel on the Rock of Cashel attest to the past of this great family.

In 1659 Carthy was a principal name in Clare, McCARTHY in Cork and McCarthey in Cork City. O’Carty is even found in Cork dating back several centuries. The ‘Mac’ prefix has generally been retained.

TONER, O’TONER

O’Toner is found as a principal name in the 1659 census.

TONER is mainly found in Armagh, Londonderry and Antrim in the 19th century. The family is generally given as one of the province of Ulster in Ireland and is traditionally linked with Co. Donegal anciently.

Claire

HOBAN, Hobane, Huban, Hubane

The HOBAN family is found centered in Mayo and Kilkenny in the 19th century.

Undocumented reports also give the name in Limerick in the 17th century and of German origins in that one instance, if true.
