Walter

Walter Report 25 Feb 2011 23:03

I understood that Walter was listed in the 1911 census at 46 Somerscales Street, but crossed off to indicate that he was not actually living there at the time, though by implication he must have been, though not at the time the census collector called. Yes?

I just checked 46 Somerscales Street again and the only ppersons listed, are,
Margaret. Jane. Delacy 53.
Isabelle Delacy 28
Edith Delacy 25
Annie Delacy 22
The only other person listed there is the lodger. Percy.M.Thompson. Baker.

But I think we have already considered these at an earlier time.I am still not able to locate Walter, though he just has to be close by, unless he is still at sea. Regards Walter

I have found a Florence Mead born 1888 St pancras London.
She married in Sulcoates A/M/J 1910 to a Walter John Elton 9d 343,her record comes up as 9d 848 but it is wrong.
Walter John Elton born Blaby leicestershire 1883.

1911 census
Florence Elton born 1888 married under one year no children.
where husband should be on top line it just says seaman, but signed W J Elton
Address 11,Frederick's terrace St Pauls Street Hull.
On the same page is a Mrs Cooper.

There is Waterloo Street and Lorne st in same area.

When you google Finsbury St where Walter Delacy is in 1901 and Somerscales st in 1911,they are all clearly in they same area.

Now thats coincidence or what?

Apologies for the error with Walters address. 109 St Georges Road was my mothers address in 1927 when she married my father. I find now that Walters mother crossed his name off the the 1911 census, presumably because he was not there. Listing him on the census as Ships Purser Merchant Navy.Cissie was living at 128 St Georges Road. Not 109 as I said in error. 128 turns out to be their address when they married. When did Cissie move into 128?

I feel sure that Cissie was never far away from Walter and may even have been living with him. Did young ladies do that in those days? Regards. Walter

They most certainly did Walter..They were normally under the heading Housekeeper on census and sometimes"Acting as wife"which I have seen written on one 1911 census..Also I have seen "Mistress"on one...But many were just said to be wife, even though there was no marriage for one reason or another..
My Great grandparents were not married to each other...They were married to other people...Great granny is down as Housekeeper on 1911 census to my Greatgrandad..Even though by then they had my Nan ...

Perhaps a plea on Records Board could ask for someone in the right area to check for a baptism.
I'm sorry that I'm so far away or I'd willingly search for you.

Walter Report 25 Feb 2011 11:23

Right then. in 1901 Walter, who's address was 3 Freds Terrace. Finsbury Street. Hull. was working on the Angelo as 2nd Cabin Steward. By 1906 or thereabouts, he had become Chief Steward and Ships Purser, but at that time the Angelo was taken out of service and scrapped.

For some reason, in 1911, Walter, now living at 46 Somerscales Street. Hull. Had become a Newsagent Tobacconist. How long he carried on in that business I have no idea. He was 30 at that time.
I now have a gap until 1926 when he married Cissie Spencer (Hephzibar) and they set up home in St Georges Road. I am not sure just now about the number, but it might have been 106. I shall know later because somewhere I have this address written down.
I feel sure that Cissie was never far away from Walter and may even have been living with him. Did young ladies do that in those days? Regards. Walter

Mary

Mary Report 25 Feb 2011 09:40

I find it strange if Cissie was the mum,her mind must have been working overtime.
Coming up with false names and occupation, why couldn't he have been just an ordinary toolmaker instead of foreman toolmaker.

I think there is some truth in that lot somewhere,i.e name of parents etc.

Did Florence or William die?did Florence remarry and present husband disowned the child?.

All ifs I know but the answer is out there somewhere.

It would help if we could find William/Henry horace Mead in 1911,maybe Florence did remarry and he is under another name.

Walter,

Just a thought. Did either Cissie or Walter DeLacy leave a will?

Wills can sometimes reveal details of the deceased's real relationships to their beneficiaries. E.G. "My natural son Fred Bloggs"

That Mead family living in Blenheim St in 1911 is the one that Jonesey posted on page 1. They were living in Albany St in 1901. Both streets can be seen on google street view maps & they are fairly close. It is about 1.5 miles from them to Ruskin Street.

Oh, this is better than reading an Agatha Christie mystery! It's real! Keep it up folks, I want to see how it ends.

Walter

Walter Report 24 Feb 2011 22:50

Thanks Mary. That figures as he must have been in Hull if as I believe he and Cissie met and formed a relationship. My father did say that he knew his real father was a seaman, but believed that he had been lost at sea, which in Walter DeLacy's case was not true. But it could have been a cover-up of sorts.

Secondly I now find that at 49 Blenheim Street (How far away from Ruskin Street is that?) there lived a Tailor called William Mead with a daughter called florence. Were they the unknowing inspiration for Cissies choice of parents for baby Horace? I don't believe that she was living at Ruskin Street, but somewhere close by. Just thoughts! Regards Walter

Mary

On 1901 census he was aboard Angelo as 2nd cabin steward.

Walter

Walter Report 24 Feb 2011 17:50

Told you that 3 Ruskin Street was a mystery house. Seems to have been a place where many different people lodged and most of them were untraceable afterwards. Weird.

I wonder when Walter DeLacy came to Hull and secured his position as Purser on the Angelo? I believe that he was in Derbyshire at the same time as Cissie Spencer. Gets more interesting as it goes on. Walter

Mary Report 24 Feb 2011 17:12

Just a thought,I wonder if electoral records could give any info as to who was living at 3,Ruskin St 1904/5
We know John Tarbitton born 1866 was there 1901 and Frederick William Thorpe born 1864 was there 1911.
Maybe Florence or Cissie lodging with either one of them.

The Electoral rolls will be in the Library local to Ruskin street.

The ship Angelo was taken out of service and sold to be scrapped Feb 1906.
It was an immigrant ship sailing between Hull and Christiana Norway?
bringing immigrants on their way to America.
lots of info on this ship on google.

He married a Phoebe Rachel born @ 1866 in Lincs and she died Cleethorpes 1942.
1911 63,Whillingham street in Clee lincs widow with son John
They had John B 1897 died 1952.
