Thank you Jan.

Trying to work out where they got his birth year date as it is incorrect, but I've sent a message hoping it is the same person, as there is only one in that area in the birth record index.

Thank you Jan.

I am searching on behalf of one of those people as they live abroad, but I hadn't realised that someone else seems to have added Malcolm to their tree.too.

.... a message off to them now !.

Have you tried sending a message to the ones on here who have him and Ivy in their tree?

Rose
Thank you for your on-going help.

He lived in Portsmouth City Council- owned sheltered accommodation, which has now been demolished / redeveloped, so any one-time residents will have been moved elsewhere. As they would have been elderly too, I think I will be lucky to track down any of them.
I
I feel I want to check records for myself, but if for any reason he has been missed off, I still won't find him.

Am I correct in thinking that if a vicar or other clergy took a burial service, then it will be in that parish's register?
I know my grandfather is not mentioned in the church registers where he is buried in a cemetery, even though the parish vicar took the service.

Do you know how long he lived in Waterlooville? Perhaps there are some neighbours around that still remember him?

Still looking........

I have checked at a Probate Office hoping that Wills might contain information about a requested burial site.

No Will listed for Malcolm or his sister Ivy.

Beryl,
Thank you for your interest.
I too am wondering if he is buried with his mother.

His father is buried in a Portsmouth cemetery ( d. 1931 ) then several years later the widow remarried and I always knew her as Mrs Smith. My next quest is to find her burial place, but that could be Portsmouth area or Salisbury, so that will take a bit more searching.
Sister of Malcolm was Ivy, and she was cremated in Salisbury in 1984, but the crematorium have checked that she did not take Malcolm there too.

I will ask them now about their mother.

perhaps his parents brought a plot and he was added to it,we had an Aunt who had a plot with space for 4 so all her family could go together,it was just a thought, where was his mother buried? Beryl

Thank you for your interest.
Yes I've checked Portsmouth cemeteries and even got them to check that he wasn't in the reopened grave of his father, who is buried in the city.

A phone call this morning confirmed that he wasn't attended by another of the funeral directors I had contacted. They had checked their archives for several years after too, just to be sure.
Everyone has been so kind and done their best to help.

I have e mailed his photo to be shown to ex staff of the home where he died, when some meet for a reunion soon.Someone may just remember him and I have to clutch at these straws of hope.

Gwyn have you tried Portsmouth cemeteries, they are very helpful, also maybe also try Winchester who have always advised me where else to look.

Thank you for that idea for a lead, Rose.

I have the sister's address in 1983 from his death certificate, so that would be a starting point, although that is not an address I remember visiting with my parents, late 1960s.

Perhaps you could look at electoral rolls to see when she stopped appearing on them. That is, if you have the address of the sister.

Rose
Thanks for your interest.

I have tried 3 crematorium in Hampshire, one in Sussex and one in Wiltshire and none have records of him....so no ashes found yet to put on the mantlepiece.

I phoned another funeral directors today and they are going to check their archives for me.

No result yet from Will, but that is on-going.
Another thought today was to find out where his mother was buried / cremated...possibly in Salisbury area as she was staying with her daughter, at one point. Maybe the daughter brought her brother back to bury them together?
If I draw a blank in Hampshire, I will extend the search to Wiltshire.
..... just got to find which SMITH record was the mother's..... unfortunately before birthday was added.

Could be he wasn't actually buried but his ashes are sitting on a mantelpiece somewhere.

Any luck with the will?

Still looking!

Have now checked Aldershot, Southampton and Salisbury crematorium and a church near his home address and a funeral directors where he died.
Also checked that he wasn't in a Portsmouth cemetery with his long-deceased father.

The search goes on........................................

Rob
Thank you for that.
I have contacted East Hampshire District Council and unfortunately he is not listed.
The staff there are very helpful though and in the past have sent a cemetery plan and location spot for a relative's grave near Alton.

I've checked Portchester Crematorium and Chichester one.

Am awaiting a few e mail replies before I start the haul of village churchyard records.

I am wondering whether he left a Will, which might mention his burial wishes.

Thanks for your interest.

Gwyn,

You mentioned originally that the death was registered in Petersfield district.
I would suggest, as a starting point, the Cemeteries Dept of East Hampshire District Council, as they seem to cover this area (they certainly maintain Petersfield Cemetery and their offices are in the town).
According to their website, this is the number for that department: 01730 234285
If your friend was cremated, this council appear not to have their own facilities but mention four close by. I would suggest that the Cemeteries Dept would be able to suggest which would be the more likely for the area.
Good luck in your search.

The Sustainability Centre replied to say they opened later than that date.

Staff at Portsmouth library have checked for a death notice in the local paper without success.

Awaiting other replies......
