You seem to have taken no account at all of the info I have posted about Rebecca and her FIRST husband - the father of her Cheesman children - and the link I highlighted to the 1851 census postings which confirmed it as being accurate

Denise

If a baby is born before the marriage then s/he will often continue to use the mother's surname afterwards. After all, it is no relation of the man the mother married.

Some stepfathers do "adopt" a child born before the marriage, giving it his name ........ remembering that "adopt" is a very fluid term, as adoptions did not become a legal form until mid-1927.

If a child is born after a marriage then it will naturally have the father's name as its surname ........... the mother's surname may be used as a second forename.

there is no hard and fast rule!

HI,
i certainly did study what you sent, maybe i wrote my question wrongly, if Rebecca Cheesman married Charles Ede, is it common practice in those days to have the name of your mother as your surname? Going by the 1941 census, i see Mary Age 1 and Rebbeca 25, with that information i am assuming Rebbeca had Mary before she married Charles Ede, and i did notice that you had highlighted the marriage between the two of them. Thanks for your help, never said i was smart. Cheers Denise

If you look carefully at 1841 census, you'll see that under 'Charman' the name Cheesman has been added - that's because the record was mistranscibed

If you look equally carefully, you will see that I posted the record of the marriage of Mary's MOTHER Rebecca Cheesman to Charles Ede

Please don't just 'browse' the info posted - please study it

I would think it was because she was born before Rebecca married Charles

Fantastic guys, sure wish that i was that smart to come up so quickly with a whole lot information like that. I am rather green with all this researching, maybe i am not confidence in where to start looking for things. Want to thank you guys so much, thanks Reggie very much and also to Marie, though i have noticed that there was a Biddy Stanbridge mentioned as living in the house hold with Douglas and Leslie at one stage, that one is a mystery to me, as i believe Douglas married a Ruth Calvert and i can't find any record of Leslie ever being married...Once again thanks heaps. Just reading through all the information you have sent Reggie, is Mary Charman the same person also known as Mary Cheesman? Then browsing down a bit further, I am thinking how is Mary cheesman related to Rebecca Cheesman if Rebecca married a Charles Ede? Sorry if i seem a bit thick here, am appreciating all your help, here, you have certainly cleared up alot of things too. I haven't actually had much of a chance to check out the 1911 Census as yet. Once again thanks so so much, Denise

Looking through just a few of the Australian Electoral Rolls Leslie seemed to live on his own during the 1940s but in the 1950s/60s his brother Douglas and other family members are with him.

Hello Denise, this is actually quite straightforward.

The 1911 census posted above shows Herbert with his parents John and Elizabeth Ann. Reggie has posted the marriage information which confirms that John's father was Peter (a gardener).

Sorry my grandfather was Herbert William Knolson Stanbridge, Born 18th July 1909 . His other siblings were Leslie, a brother, and also there was Douglas another brother. Leslie is a bit of a mystery , i have had no luck over here in Australia finding any information on Leslie apart from where he lived throughout the censuses in Australia, he moved around a bit. Don't even know if he married. The other sibling Douglas i have a bit more luck with. I am still very green in where to start to find things, i hit a brick wall and i tend to stay backed off. Thanks again for your help guys!

You say again that this man was your great-grandfather, but have still NOT told us the name of your grandfather!

What was it? And when was he born?

Don't guess - don't rely on 'passed-on' info

Rely only on that which can be verified

Hi, Thanks for your quick reply: The photo of him that is on Ancestry is the one that i have.

Yes that is the John Stanbridge, the one mentioned in the service record there, whom is my great grandfather, after that is where i am a bit confused, as to whom is his parents for sure, as in my earlier research i had come across another john stanbridge, whom's parents were John and Lucy (Dench) i think of Lewisham, only because the name was passed on to me through a distant family member, but when i seen that the john stanbridge who was my great grandfather from Dorking, which was on his service record i thought hang on there, i did apply for his birth certificate and its says Peter and Mary Stanbridge (nee Cheesman) were his parents but it could also be John and Lucy (Dench) My actual grandfather was born in Lewisham...Maybe this is where i am getting confused. I got the service record info from the Commonwealth Service Records site. I actually applied for both sets of birth certificates for two lots of John Stanbridge whom one is my great grandparents but it doesn't really confirm what branch is the one i am after. sorry if i have confused you more here, but thanks for the quick reply though. Cheers Denise

A tree on Ancestry has details of this John Stanbridge together with a photograph of him in uniform. It does not give the names of his parents.
