Another tip,

when you find a record, it is usualy transcribed from the original,

Always check the original image where possible

transcriptions often have errors

Just a slight correction to one of Reggie's posts - certs cost £9.25 not £92.5! This is the site to order them from:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

To get the cert at the above price, you will need to quote the vol and page nos from the index. Also, tick the box that asks if you have the full ref.

Unfortuneatly, there is nowhere that you can see the details of an entry without buying the cert although some areas (eg London and parts of Yorkshire) are on some websites (eg Ancestry) and these sites show images of the original church registers.

When you get back to parish records (pre 1837) the info given is far less - fathers are not normally given on marriages and mother's maiden names are not on most baptisms, so absolute relationships are difficult to prove.

Good luck with your search and do come back if you need more help - and thank you for staying around to read the posts - most threads get an answer very quickly and it is very frustrating for helpers when people post and run!

Ian, Most experienced researchers use as many free sites as possible but also use sites pay/subscription sites like Ancestry and Findmypast, GR is owned by the same company that owns Fiindmypast so all the records you access on GR come from their sister site

Their are several threads on this board witch list free sites see threads by Joy Kentish Maid and others

Ian, We where all new to Genealogy once,
No shame in that

Try using other sites free sites in conjunction with GR for records

For BMD from 1837 up to abt 1960 use freebmd

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

when looking for an event BMD it's important to no which registration district it should be registered in so use this site to cross reference BMD's

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/

It will give you a list of civil parishes/places in each district

I kow where i have gone wrong, i was looking for someone in 1852 because i found a census record from1861 with a William Hopkinson, and Ann Hopkinson with several children, one being James who was 9 years old at the time. Due to the names and area matchig what i thought to be correct, and probably being over excited with it, ive gone off on a tangent. Thanks to you i can see my errors!

If i was to go to the records offics in Nottingham, would i be able to view originals before buying certs?

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 10 Feb 2013 09:39

Just to enlighten you................the BMD index is just that.......an index.

To see detailed info, you have to purchase certs...........they cost £9.25, ordered on line from the GRO

Edited to show correct price

ErikaH Report 10 Feb 2013 09:37

Reggie, yes your right. It is the 1911 census. That is them! Albert the hairdresser manager is my great grandad, and the other siblings are my dads great uncles and aunts.

I have a record for them all in 1901 census too, hang on let me find it

Well i dont know 100% that William and Ann are his parents - i worded it incorrectly really, what i should have said was:

I have located a birth record for a James Hopkinson born in 1852, the same year as my James Hopkinson was born, and in the correct nottingham area. However, the record doesnt state on genesreunited who the parents are, and when i view the original record, it just gives James's name and birth year and an archive reference. However, if i then input the birth information on familysearch.org which i believe is something to do with the church of latter day saints? the apparent same birth record shows up and states that the parents where William and Ann. Thats why i say that i cant verify that information 100%. If i was to go to the reocrd office and look up that reference number would that tell me the parents full names and Ann's maiden name?

I'm afraid you may need to re-think.

You are, as far as can be deduced, 10 years 'out'

This is the census to which you refer......NOT 1901

You say that you 'know' that James's parents were William and Ann.......is this taken from his birth cert?

If so, you should know Ann's maiden name

Unless you have seen the parents on 1841 with children, you can't assume that to be a fact.
