a big 'well done' to the GR team who look after the FB page...after many months of prompting by long term members ( who spent much time giving help and directing new searchers to the site) GR staff are now in evidence there guiding newbies 'over here' to the main site.... someone obviously cottoned on that opportunities for bringing in new members were being missed :-)

Welcome to any newbies who have arrived, and please feel free to ask on the boards if you need help.

For once I will not be moaning at GR about FB

Well done the Team

Wheee..... Good to see somebody promoting GR's FaceBook

How many members have actually ticked like

Even oldies have to keep up with technology

:-D :-D :-D

Loads of them NanaSue, you won't perhaps recognise the names which are different on FB to here, but many of those you see helping here each day are also on the the FB page.

ErikaH Report 25 Apr 2013 13:29

This isn't 'promoting' facebook...........heaven knows, it doesn't need it

It's complimenting GR staff on finally doing the sensible thing on their FB page.

I, and many thousands of others, would never dream of using FB

Ta Reggie - have corrected my comment before the bullets start flying

Rambling

Rambling Report 25 Apr 2013 13:41

Very true Reggie, and it goes without saying that if one does use FB for anything one should be very aware of the need to adequately protect ones privacy. Hence you rarely see a board name used on here also being used on there :-)

CupCakes Report 25 Apr 2013 13:55

There was a slagging off of Facebook some time ago so to avoid controversy I just kept quiet - there are always moaning minnies and you can't change them.

Would be interesting to know who is on Facebook
Hands up if you dare

:-D :-D :-D :-D

jax Report 25 Apr 2013 14:01

The only time I have ever seen you post on the GR facebook page Nanasue, was about 18 months ago when you were slagging off the helpers on these boards....so not a very good advertisment from you was it?

CupCakes

CupCakes Report 25 Apr 2013 14:04

jax you obviously have a better memory than me. I don't have to post anything, just like if I want - I read FB everyday because most of the people I know & most relies live overseas.
Lets not start bullets at me personally again - My excuse is an age moment whats yours.

Rambling

Rambling Report 25 Apr 2013 14:13

I have an excellent memory ;-) and so I have noted the improvements in the way the GR page is used now, there is still some disparity in notifying the timing of competitions for example but there is no longer ( I hope) the major problem of having to try and contact staff via FB because one couldn't get into this site...that was a problem not fully appreciated by those unaffected but was extremely frustrating at the time.

I am on FB but don't use it very much, it is handy for keeping an eye on how relatives overseas are doing. But I look at the GR page and other genealogy pages also.

Thanks everyone. We really value the research and help you all give on the Community Boards. We know that when we direct people to the boards there are members who are willing and able to help break down their brick walls, which is fantastic.

Cynthia Report 25 Apr 2013 20:15

Thank you for the information Rose.

I rarely look at the GR page on FB - only if something on my newsfeed catches my attention. I used to feel so sorry for all those new folk who were asking questions which just disappeared down the page and out of sight.

I'll go and have a looksee :-D

NanaSue, why do you want to know who is on FB and why would we 'dare' to say so? :-S

I am not ashamed to say that I love FB and use it constantly as do many others.

Are you taking an inventory?

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 25 Apr 2013 20:31

Okay.....yes, there is more input from GR which is good.....BUT....it seems there is still the problem of people not returning to acknowledge the advice given.

Natasha, it may be helpful if GR 'liked' the questions and then posted their advice. The poster will then get a notification symbol and, hopefully, discover the boards on here.

I see there are still some GR folk - past and present - helping out. :-D

Just to stick my head up the battlements ..... whilst quaking in my booties -

I DARE to say I liked the Genes Reunited FB page ....

Back in the day, when they had less than c 400 likes -

along with a large group of ardent GR - researchers who manned the

FA board 24/ 7 - from all over the world

I still love Facebook

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 25 Apr 2013 21:52

I think it is good that GR staff are now directing askers on their FB page over to here.

we've pushed for that for so long

NS .....................

I'm one of the ones who used to help on there ................ and spent much time, along with other GR members, informing people about this site, as well as trying to find information for them.

The problem with FB is that posts disappear down the page, and never rise to the top when new responses are added to them.

I'm pretty certain that most of the work we did on there disappeared off the page and was not found again!

Plus .............. there was a lot of nastiness around, still is for that matter. So I stopped helping around the time the Timeline was instituted.

However, I do remember the events of 18 months ago, just like Jax and PP .........................

we do tend to remember those who denigrate us

and I dare to say that I am older than you ............... so, NS, please do stop using the age thing.

It's old, and out-of-date, and most definitely NOT applicable when you are surrounded by people older than yourself!

If you call yourself old, you are and will be old.

NanaSue,

When I liked the Facebook page I was the 322 person to do so.

Back then there was a poor member who kept posting how she was being bullied on the General Chat board and it was rather distressing to read these posts.
I won't mention this person name but I haven't seen this person on FB for a very long time.

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 26 Apr 2013 07:43

And sadly it seems as though nothing has changed much - the bullying is still here in one form or another.
