Its a really strange one. The only logical explanation is the m other remarried and some of the children used his name, I'll look into that. Thanks

I reckon she was Ada Hermitage born 1897 married William Dawton in 1913....maybe Denton was a mistranscription of Dawton.....or she was hiding something...maybe she was still married to William?? who seems to have disappeared after 1917 no death record for him that I can see

William was in the army but was discharged in 1916... details of marriage are on his army pension papers two witnesses that look like May or Mary Hermitage and Ernest Dawton/Denton

Ernest Dawton seems to be his brother...1891 census has the name transcribed as Danton....so it looks very possible it is her

I like what you're saying, its a good theory but why would she use Hermitage on the birth registration of her children and Denton on her marriage certificate. It certainly one big mystery.

jax

jax Report 14 Mar 2014 17:05

Because they did......People got confused or tried cover things up...like previous marriages...if she said her name was Denton/Dawton spinster....then when giving fathers name they would automatically think his surname was Denton/Dawton...unless she said otherwise

Who registered the birth of the child was it the mother?

When a child's birth was reg. there wouldn't be any ref to what names were on the parents marriage cert so she was safe giving her maiden name of Hermitage

It really looks like she had been previously married and then some covering up was done

Yeah the mother registered the birth. Thanks for all your help you've certainly given me plenty to think about.
