I have found my above ancestor on the 1851 census - on the household transcription it has him down as grandson of the head of household. When I went on to the original copy of the census to find out who the head of household is it did not contain any details relating to the Bleasdales' at all I have looked on pages 1 up to page 13 but I think it will use up all my credits trying to find the information - does anyone have any idea how I can find out more information - any help appreciated. Thanks A

Joseph

Have looked on FMP and there seems to be a problem looking at originals either via names or Address. The FMP transcription when inputting via an address search gives Ellen Bleasdale aged 52 as the Unmarried Head of Household, born Wyresdale and a Housekeeper

Ellen is the head, but has been put at bottom of previous page.

Must be my computer - I have the transcript, commencing with Richard at 100 Bedford street, but when I ask to see the original it takes me to numbers 54 and 55 St Peters Ward and 233/234 Fylde Street. No mentions of the Bleasdales. Asking to see previous page takes me to Page 1 and for next page it just shows me page 3 again and again......... Have put in a report.

Potty Report 26 Mar 2014 11:07

Who did he marry? There seem to be two Williams born 1845/1846 in Preston.

Anne

Anne Report 26 Mar 2014 13:06

Hi Potty
The William Bleasdale that was my great great great grandfather married Rosina Gillbrand? I think. Rosina had 4 sisters they all moved to the Pendleton area of Salford presumably for work (Rosina has been spelt differently on the census Rosena) I find it odd that Edward Airey was William's father but did not take his father's name kept his mother's name Bleasdale

mgnv

mgnv Report 26 Mar 2014 13:51

It would be odd if he were his dad, but if you read the posts carefully, you'll see that Robt was his dad and Edmund his uncle.

There's a hit at Ancestry, but I don't have a sub, and didn't guess all the missinG details.
MAYBE SOMEONE WITH AN ANCESTRY SUB COULD HELP OUT HERE.

The marriage image on Ancestry gives William Henry's father as Robert, Brewer. The couple were both living at 1 Paradise St, Salford. William, 26, warehouseman; Rosina, 21, father Robert, Shoemaker.

Lancs opc has this baptism, but Robert's occupation is different:

Baptism: 11 Jan 1846 St John, Preston, Lancashire, England
William Henry Bleasdale - [Child] of Robert Bleasdale & Esther
Abode: Chatham St
Occupation: Wool Comber
Baptised by: W M Colles Curate

Edit: just noticed the baptism has already been posted.

Anne ..................

re Edmund being given as William's father on the Census

It is always an assumption by the enumerators and the modern day transcribers that the husband is the father of a child shown n the census ........................ the fact that William kept his mother's maiden name is an indication that he was illegitimate if he was indeed Ann's son, and not the child of another offspring of Ellen.

You would have to buy his birth certificate to determine the true story ................. which in this case, would mean buying at least 2 certificates as there are 2 William Bleasdale's born in the time period.

It is worth noting, in case you were not aware, that any child born of a married woman is considered the child of her husband whether or not the husband is still living with his wife, or indeed, whether he is dead!

I once found a birth certificate for a child named as the son of a man who had died 10 years before ............... his wife had not remarried, still used her married name, and the registrar either assumed that the husband was the father, or the widow told a lie.

This means that it is very difficult to find the birth father!

The only times that you do not see this, are

a) when the mother tells the Registrar that her husband is dead and she does not know the father ............... but the child will still have her married name as that is her legal name, and you would not know about the father unless you bought the certificate

or b), the birth father attends the Registry Office and admitted to being the father.

Anne Report 26 Mar 2014 20:41

Thank you Sylvia - I will purchase the birth certificates at least that may give me some clarity.
