Welcome to Genes and the boards.

It is unlikely that Dianne will see your message. However she is still a member so you can contact her by clicking on her name and send her a message. Genes will notify her of that but not of your post on here.

Hi Dianne
I know this chat has long finished (2014) but just came across it today.
Have some Holmes history going back to John and wondered if still possible we could converse on this subject.
Best,

Maybe Rosa thought she was born there or the registrar just assumed she was??

Not every record is online but if you want to know what Carolines maiden name was and where she was born you will need that 2nd marriage cert

Dianne

Dianne Report 7 Jun 2014 18:08

Thanks again! Rosa's birth wasn't on the records for NSW, but she was born in England or California, so an error was made. No wonder people have a hard time looking for their ancestors! Dianne

Maybe you should purchase this marriage cert....she is sure to know her own maiden name

On Rosa Holmes's marriage cert it says she was born NSW and consent was given by her mother Caroline Fletcher... no mention of her maiden name on that one

jax

jax Report 7 Jun 2014 17:30

I am only going by the trees on Ancestry....as I said they differ

The marriage certificate which I have looked at for George says his parents names were John Holmes dec'd Typefounder and mother was Caroline Gager.....so maybe George didn't bother to ask his mother what her name was and just made it up???

Dianne

Dianne Report 7 Jun 2014 17:19

Thank-you again for your help, but Gager couldn't be Caroline's last name
and you have to take what is said with a grain of salt. John did not marry
Caroline in 1838 and the one in 1839 is not them. I've looked at all these
records and there is no proof. If, you have the California records from 1840-1850,
I would appreciate it. Dianne

Did George Holmes marry Margaret wade in 1866....if so John Holmes and Caroline Gager were his parents. (as per the marriage cert)

On the marriage cert for George, fathers occupation was a Typefounder

George died in 1918 father John Holmes Mother Caroline unknown

he was born in San Francisco and was 76 and had been in Australia of 69 years

These marriage and death certs belong to the tree owner of the one I gave you above

So the details I gave you seem to fit but the dates are slightly out

Dianne

Dianne Report 7 Jun 2014 15:52

Thank-you again for your suggestions, William Henry was born about 1830 in
England and he died in 1867 in NSW. Rosa Holmes was born in April 1841- March
1842 in England or the USA and George Holmes was born on 11 April 1842 or 1845. Caroline Holmes remarried in 1852 to William Fletcher in NSW. Caroline
might have been born in London and can't find a marriage to John Holmes, she
could have been married before. Would the William Henry Holmes, son to John
and Caroline have been born about 1830? There was a John Holmes at www.castlegardens.org arriving in 1849 as a Iron Moulder at New York, USA, plus
Mr and Mrs Holmes and 4 children leaving San Francisco to Australia on the John
Witt vessel in 1849.

Will this help! Dianne

Dianne ................

we really do need more information if we are to help you.

Remember, we are only members like yourself, using the experience we have gained over the years of researching our own families, and also using various sites that we have learnt about over the years.

BUT ............. we do need help from you!

For example .............................

are you sure that you have the correct children??

I could not find a John and Caroline with those named children

I could find a William Henry with parents John and Caroline, but not with siblings Rosa or George

I could find siblings Rosa and George with parents John and Caroline (different surname) but not a sibling William Henry (or William or Henry)

How did you get back to this family?

jax

jax Report 6 Jun 2014 19:17

Ok

I am sorry we cannot help unless you give us some info about them or their children

Dianne

Dianne Report 6 Jun 2014 18:52

That was not the correct John and Caroline, thanks for your reply. Dianne

jax

jax Report 6 Jun 2014 16:57
