Karen

to order his birth certificate, use the site ............

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

Order certificates online

you have to register, but it is free

Certificates cost £9.25, post and handling included no matter where you are in the world.

Fill out the information EXACTLY as it shows in that registration that Jax has just posted

ie,

Births Jun 1900 (>99%)
Dofs William Salford 8d 175

They will ask if you have the GRO Registration Number ......... answer YES ........ it is that set of 2 numbers at the right side of the line (8d 175)

Do not use any other site ................. GRO is by far the cheapest site to use.

GRO = General Register Office

Unknown Report 9 Oct 2014 23:20

William Whitham marriage certificate to Elizabeth Nunn states he was born in 1899 fathers name was Charles Whitham noted on marriage certificate deceased. Merchant navy seamen records state he was born in Salford Lancashire date of death 1935 at sea. I have researched all birth certificates for that period and none of the fathers names are Charles. They were called Dore and some of them did not change their name in the first world war. I know this as my mother said that my fathers uncle lived in the same street Broomhall Road in Swinton which must of been William Whithams brother his name was Fred that was in 1957. Are there records that show change of name (deed poll). Surely people couldnt just change their name and there are no records?

and ...........

Unknown Report 9 Oct 2014 23:37

I was told by my father that they originally came from Germany. Some were interned on the Isle of White with the name Dore. I do not know anything else except that some of the sons were in the navy and army fighting for England whilst their parents were interned. I am assuming that the name was changed by Charles Whitham that is noted on William Whitham's marriage certificate deceased in 1923. William Whitham could be older or younger than 1899 I have exhausted all avenues of finding his birth certificate. When he join the Merchant Navy did he not have to produce a birth certificate. It states on all his discharges that he was born in 1899 Salford Lancashire.

SylviaInCanada Report 12 Oct 2014 00:18

to be truthful ......

didn't Karen say there was a family story that the name had been changed to Whitham from a possibly German name?

...................

and the researchers on here have found this family Dohs (and variants) that seem to fit the family

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 11 Oct 2014 21:07

But his birth wouldn't have been as Whitham, so we should have been made aware of that in the first instance.

I wasn't the only one who spent time and effort looking for Whitham

ChristinaS

ChristinaS Report 11 Oct 2014 16:38

Jacqueline - Karen seems to have gone, so I'll answer your query. :-)

It's because her Gt.Grandfather, William, had changed his name to Whitham by the time he got married in 1923.

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 11 Oct 2014 15:54

If the name was known to be Dore, why was the request for Whitham?

The family are under the name of Dohs on the 1911.

Very helpfully the housekeeper has included the widowed father Carl, although he was away at the time. Also daughter, Minnie, who was in hospital. Plus she has named daughter, Clara, although she had died.

ChristinaS Report 10 Oct 2014 22:30

If we have the right family here, it looks as though the name Whitham was made up from the mother's maiden name of Whitingham
