Donna many of us use other sites as well as this one, some of the records come from Ancestry which has some Liverpool records not available here, some from free sites like www.lan-opc.org.uk/ , some things are found just by googling a combination of names. :-)

Thanks Mary, how do you get access to all those records like the one stating he was in Chaucer Street in 1916?
I joined as platinum thinking I could access all the records but have only been able to look at electoral registers from 2002 and where are the sailing records? will I have to add those on to my membership?

Mary

Mary Report 11 Sep 2015 10:28

13/5/1916 James Carney was at 32, Chaucer Street Bootle same place as Bridget and Thomas in 1911.

Just been looking closer at sailing records for James Carney age 25 = 1877 of which there are 3 on them on all he gives his address as 24,Nursery Street.
1902
13/11/1902 Ship Saxonia
19/12/1902 Saxonia.

They weren't at number 24 Nursery Street on 1901 census but may have been in that area.

Edit post removed, info already posted and I missed it.

I was wondering if, as the marriage was in 1895 there might have been another child or children before Bridget?

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 10 Sep 2015 22:09

I tried at CWGC site but there is no Carney who died on 11 Nov 1918

I wondered whether it was Bridget's uncle John Edward O'Malley who was meant, as Chris posted:

EDWARD JOHN O'MALLEY
KILLED IN ACTION 22ND SEP. 1914,
AGED 38 YEARS.

for someone to have been in the military and die in 1918 he would in all likelihood have been born before 1900 that is before Bridget

there are unfortunately numerous J and John Carneys in the CWGC lists for whom no age or next of kin info is given

I also had tried only Bri*et, Marg*, etc etc

and got nowhere

Did anyone get any further with this?

"I remember my Mum saying my gran had a brother Uncle Johnny who died in the war on armistice day, which would tie in."

Joonie, I've tried the same, first name, surname , variations of Carney , and even for Bridget, 'infant', 'baby', and just the birth year + -2 and can't find anything either :-(

1901 Irish census

JoonieCloonie Report 10 Sep 2015 20:41

oops I got leapfrogged :-)

we never give up Donna! try again another time maybe, yes ... not give up!

I have been certainly trying only given names, only car* for surname, and every other permutation that has found me my own ancestors and others, but no luck in 1901 indeed ... so far ...

Sorry Donna, I got a bit lost with that Thomas !

Irish census were destroyed, other than some fragments the 1901 and 1911. But Church records exist.

there is an info thread for irish genealogy stickied at the top of this page which may help :-)

JoonieCloonie Report 10 Sep 2015 20:39

if that is Thomas father of Margaret, the Tucker girls were slightly older than stated

Births Jun 1862
TUCKER Annie Liverpool 8b 20

Births Mar 1864
TUCKER Mary Elizabeth Liverpool 8b 51

and in 1871 they were with widowed mother Elizabeth, charwoman, boarding in a McNamara household in Liverpool. But Elizabeth and Thomas don't seem to have married.

I might wonder whether Margaret was really born in Ireland ... if Thomas was born in Cork ...

e.g. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FG41-THW

Name Margaret Driscoll
Gender Female
Birth Date 26 Sep 1872
Birthplace Cork, Ireland
Father's Name Thomas Driscoll
Mother's Name Margaret Butler

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Sep 2015 20:38

there are 2 possibilties as to why we can't find Margaret and Bridget on the 1901

1. There has been an error in how the surname was written ............... it is not unknown for the enumerator tow miss out a surname and "add" someone to either the house next door, or to others in the house if they are boarding.

One has to look for people using only their forenames, birth year and birth place, and hope that something strikes a bell.

2. It is not unknown for someone to be missed off the census ........... reasons unknown

Donna

Donna Report 10 Sep 2015 20:33

I don't like it but I think I've gone as far as I can go with Margaret and Bridget.
Unless, Margaret had relatives in Ireland (which most of Liverpool have) and for some reason she was there the night the census was done.
I heard it's not possible to access Irish records due to a fire or something. Is that correct?
If so I might start looking at my Dads lineage in Scotland. I think his grandfather was valet in a big house in the Calton hill area. Do I have to join Scotland's People for that? My Dad was born in Glasgow, his mother was from there.
ps I know it's not nice but we call Margaret Driscoll Nanny X (with affection) because she could only make her mark with an X. Isn't it amazing how a family can change in 3 generations. Nanny X had at least 9 grandchildren and about 30 great grandchildren, all happy and doing well

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 10 Sep 2015 19:41

funny ... this looks a lot like father Thomas Driscoll, in 1881, but he's with his wife and her children and there's no Margaret

Name: Thomas Driscoll
Age: 58
Estimated birth year: abt 1823
Relationship to Head: Head
Spouse: Elizabeth Driscoll
Gender: Male
>> Where born: Cork Co, Ireland
Civil Parish: Liverpool
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England
Street address: 25 Paget St
Marital Status: Married
>> Occupation: Mariner
Registration district: Liverpool

Thomas Driscoll 58 (was 68 in 1891)
Elizabeth Driscoll 41 born Ireland
Anny Tucker 17 stepdaughter born Liverpool
Mary E. Tucker 15 ditto

Deaths Jun 1881 ?
DRISCOLL Elizabeth 42 Liverpool 8b 37

if Margaret lived with her father Thomas, James being a seaman, and her father died in 1900, it could explain why she wasn't in the same place in 1901 as she was in early 1900 when Bridget was born.

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 10 Sep 2015 19:23

I agree the 1901 Marg & John Ed are unrelated

Rambling Rose you have confused me ...

the 1891 Marg is with father Thomas Driscoll
the 1901 widower Thomas is a Carney

:-)

unfortunately possibly

Deaths Jun 1900
Driscoll Thomas 76 W. Derby 8b 255

Donna

Donna Report 10 Sep 2015 18:10

From all your research I can conclude that Margaret and baby Bridget are nowhere to be found in the 1901 census and when I look for Margaret age 15 she is with her father Thomas a widower in 1891 but in 1881 she is not in Thomas household.

Donna

Donna Report 10 Sep 2015 17:35

Chis Ho, It's interesting that you found out Mary O'Malley was a Carney. We were always under the impression that it was a sailor colleague of James Thomas O'Malley who took Bridget and Thomas in when their mother died and their father was at sea. Looks like Mary was some relation to James after all.
