I agree, Kay, that's one of the reasons I was sceptical about her death record in Stockport.

I've made contact with the family and am hoping to learn more that way.

Kay????

Kay???? Report 23 Mar 2016 19:42

I cant see moving to Stockport from Lincoln to go into a care home, when there was many care homes in and around Lincolnshire.......,,,,,, she must have already lived in the area and someone brought her back home to Lincoln to have her funeral.

Get her death cert to see who registered her death,

Keith ............

would the home be willing to forward a letter from you to that person in Spain?

You could send it to the home to be forwarded ........ and she/he could do the reverse.

KeithG

KeithG Report 23 Mar 2016 13:44

mmm... well, I called, but the person to whom I spoke wasn't able to help. The person who might be able to help lives in Spain and doesn't "do" email. Oh well ...

Can't do any harm to give it a try, Sylvia.

It is possible that she moved to Stockport voluntarily between 1980 and 1994, worth investigating, thanks Kay.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 22 Mar 2016 23:15

As the care home is still in existence, would it be worth contacting them to see if they have any records that they would be willing to consult to help you?

You do have to remember that all medical records are private.

Kay????

Kay???? Report 22 Mar 2016 23:06

Also between Mr Archer dying she may have found a new partner and moved to the Stockport area and never married him?

KeithG Report 22 Mar 2016 22:47

Magic, thank you very much RR, I should have looked there too!

Here you go ( I should have remembered to look here first!)

Archer, Laura Annie cremated on: 14 September 1994 recorded at: Lincoln Crematorium (Lincolnshire) date of death 07 September 1994

I hadn't considered the "where space was available" argument, thank you for that Sylvia.

I've had a quick look for ERs but no luck as yet.

Keith ................

my sister-i-l is currently in a care home in Stockport, but not the same one that Laura was in. She had lived in Dukinfield/Ashton for the last 20+ years of her life, and in Manchester for the previous 30 years. One daughter lives elsewhere in the Greater Manchester area, the other lives "dahn south".

In her case, Stockport is where the vacancy was for the level of care that she needed. I believe it is considered local, and in Greater Manchester

I'm not sure whether you could find out how long Laura had been in that home ............ she would be on the Electoral Roll if you could find one.

KeithG

KeithG Report 22 Mar 2016 21:04

Thanks RR.

Her daughter lived "just around the corner" from her in Lincoln, her other children lived in (I believe) Peterborough / Cambridge, as far as I have been able to find out so far Stockport just doesn't fit!

On the basis of "when you have eliminated all other possibilities, whatever is left, however improbable, must be the solution" it's looking more and more as if the Stockport record must be the answer. It just doesn't "feel" right!

Rambling Report 22 Mar 2016 20:53

The probate office being Leeds isn't really relevant, there are a number of probate offices and the probate office handling it is not always close to where the person died ( I have found anyway).

http://www.probateforms.info/probate-registries/

It might be reasonable to suppose that if Laura was in a care home in Stockport that the reason was that one of her children/relatives lived in that general area but not nec', she might have moved or gone to live with a friend prior to that.

KeithG Report 22 Mar 2016 20:49

Thanks for the clarification, Sylvia.

Looking through the other records on the same page, the executors do not seem generally to be named.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 22 Mar 2016 20:18

Keith ..............

the Probate record is just an Index to wills probated, or administration granted, and it usually does state to whom Probate or Administration was granted.

That entry for Laura does not say who was granted Probate, which is why I said it was "interesting".

Although I have not usually looked for ones in such recent times.

And the Record does only show those who have been granted Probate or Administration, ie the Executors ............... so you have to buy the will to see who might be named in there. After all, many people only have lawyers, or other non-related professionals as Executor.

The Executor, whether granted Probate or Administration is responsible for distributing the estate as directed in the will ............. and may not inherit anything at all

I am also tempted to accept the Stockport death, but I still have these lingering doubts.

I don't know enough about probate. Laura Annie, long time resident of Lincoln, dies in a nursing home in Stockport, and probate is granted in Leeds. Does that make sense?

Then there's the difference in birth date, might be a misunderstanding / typo / misreading / whatever?

And then there's the coincidence (?) that I've seen the assertion that she died on *7 September* 1988 in Lincoln , and then the probate (for which many thanks, I had not found that) stating she died *7 September* 1994.

Sylvia: why is the lack of other names interesting? Is it normal in probate records to state all previous names?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 22 Mar 2016 19:18

Interesting, Laura's probate record does not state any other name

Probate was granted Leeds 6 December 1994. Estate not exceeding £1250.00

Another one to buy?????????

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 22 Mar 2016 19:14

Similarly ............

William Robert Archer of 152 West Parade, Lincoln, died 22 January 1946. Probate granted Lincoln 3 July 1946 to Laura Annie Archer, married woman. Effects £573 17s

Again, she was responsible for distributing the estate as his will directed.

You would had to buy the wills to find out who actually inherited.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 22 Mar 2016 19:09

Clarence Charles Clarence Beecham, of 11 Pyrland Road, Islington, London, t died 14 November 1957 at the Royal Northern Hospital, Islington. Administration granted London 6 March 1959 to Laura Annie Beecham, widow. Effects £160

That does NOT mean that he left the estate to Laura, but that she was responsible for distributing the estate as he directed in the will.

NB ......... the link given in RR's post did not work for me, due to some problem that they were "working on".

I used the main site, and then looked for Beecham

Probate for Laura Annie Archer 7th Sep 1994, Hollymead Nursing home , 160 heaton Road ( Stockport, it's still there). Might well account for the informant not knowing correct DOB when registering the death?
