Murder !!!!

Joanna Report 15 Apr 2016 21:23

This is only a family rumer ....

My Great grandad was born Samuel Bullas / Bullus. By the age of 6 it looks like he was living with his grandparents Samuel & Sarah Tennant & went by the name of Tennant or Bullas ! He did marry a Tennant & all his kids were named Tennant.

The story gos he lived with his grandparents due to a family fall out to do with a murder !

I can not find any trace of his parents after his birth - his parents are William Bullus & Elizabeth herbert.

Also how could he be born a Bullus but then go on to be called Tennant ? Did you need to change your name by deed poll then ? Or could you just call yourself whatever you liked !

William appears as the eldest child on the census and this would appear to be the parents marriage

William born a Bullus

Mother Sarah Bullus then marries Samuel Tennant but as William marries as a Bullus I wonder if Samuel was perhaps not his Father but accepted him as a son
(or was the Father but William married under his given birth surname).

Young Samuel born as a Bullus because that was his Father's surname.

You can call yourself what you want as long as it's not for fraudulent purposes.

Your OP says Samuel married a Tennant, do you mean AS Tennant -
is this Samuel's marriage as Tennant - he names his Father as William Tennant

Perhaps there was some stigma attached to the Bullus name but not finding any newspaper reports from the period

Thats the family yes !
William Bullus was born to Sarah Bullus (no father on cert) William was a few months old when Sarah Married Samuel Tennant.

Yes Samuel Married Sophia fox - his father is listed on the certificate as William Tennant Bullus (Deceased)

I cant find anything for William Bullus anywhere after Samuels birth :-/

I dont think I will ever know if Samuel Tennant Was William Bullas father.

I dident have the 1939 entry so thankyou so much for that !

I would love to find out what happend to Samuels parents & how he came to live with his grandparents !
It was my grandad (Samuel Tennants son) who told me it was something to do with a murder a few years ago.

I have recently been in toch with another decendant of samuels who had also been told the same story - but I am now stuck !

Thankyou for you help x

In the 1939 entry - why would Eileen Frost (Tennant) be listed as single ? The name frost would make me think she was married ! Divorced maybe ?

What a shame you didn't continue on the previous thread Joanna , where much of this information had already been found.

On the 1939 register, Eileen would have been registered as Tennant because that was her name at the time. When she married, (posted above by safc), her name would have been changed on the register - it became the basis for the National Health Service register and was updated until 1991. As she was born after 1915, her record would remain closed (masked out) i.e. not able to be seen under the 100 year rule, unless she had died pre 1991 or a death certificate has been provided since the Register was recently opened to public view, to allow the record to be opened.

There is an Eileen Frost death Ilkeston RD showing in 1982 showing a dob of 16.5.1921 which matches that shown in the Register.
