Nadine, I doubt Rebecca ever married Soloman as she later marries George Bonny under the surname Cain.

I believe all these children are Rebecca's-. As an unmarried woman, regardless of the father, they would have all been registered under surname Cain (although many woman did lie about marital status)

Charles Henry Cain b1855 Hampstead

Henry Cain b1862 Hampstead (Died 1865 Hampstead)

Albert George Cain b1867 Hampstead

Sarah Ann Cain b 1869 Hampstead (Died 1872 Hampstead)

Soloman Cain b1874 Hampstead (Died 1876 Hampstead)
-------------------------------------------------

I was hoping once you'd started inputting the information into a tree, that it might make it all easier to understand.

If there's anything that you're not sure of just ask.

Ive done lots of trees for friends but this side of the tree is the most confusing! lol

Thanks so much guys! Im slowly putting it into the tree and amending everything!

Im guessing she had a couple of kids out of wedlock (tut tut!) and then hooked up with Soloman (cant find a marriage certificate so im not sure if they married?) but how come their children had her surname not his?? i would have thought she would want them to have his name?

After Solomon Heady dies (1874), Rebecca (mother of your Charles William), marries George Bonny in 1877:

Parish: St John, Hampstead
Borough: Camden
Father Name: Charles Cain
Spouse Father: Samuel Bonny
Register Type: Parish Register
-------------------------------------

This is her in 1891- note Grandaughter, Lilly- Lilly was the daughter of your Charles William Cain and Elizabeth (nee Hosier):

This is from page one that Margaret posted:

Name: Charles William Cain
Spouse: Emma Skitmore
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 25 Dec 1875
Parish: St James the Great, Bethnal Green
Borough: Tower Hamlets
Father Name: John Cain
Spouse Father: William Skitmore
Register Type: Parish Register

Witnesses were Martha Cain and Harry Skidmore
-----------------------------------

Interestingly that Charles & Emma also had a son, Charles William, born 10th July 1877.

Name: Charles William Cane
Record Type: Baptism
Born 10 July 1877
Baptism Date: 6 Jan 1879
Father's name: Charles William Cane
Mother's name: Emma Cane
Parish or Poor Law Union: St Pancras
Borough: Camden
Register Type: Parish Registers

(There is a possible death which would have been shortly after this baptism in first quarter 1879)

------------------------------------------------------

It seems a lot of trees on Ancestry have made the same mistakes- confusing the two Charles William Cain.

Charles W, the son of John E & Martha was born in 1853. He possibly died in 1878, which could be why there is so much confusion.

Yours was born in 1855

Think that's incorrect Nadine- I suspect that Charles (son of John & Martha) is the one that married Emma Skidmore. When you get time take a look at the information posted, I'm sure you'll see.

Ah- now this looks to be Rebecca with her Mum in 1841 & 1851. Possibly her Mum was later Ann Stringer/ Stronger, so would be the grandmother of Charles and Albert.

The original of this baptism shows that parents Solomon Cain & Rebecca is crossed out and "single woman" written in.

So, it seems that Charles William Senior was the son of Rebecca Cain who was living with Soloman Heady (a plasterer).

AustinQ Report 11 Nov 2016 10:52

OK, and this is the link- Albert was lodging with WIlliam Stringer in 1881. Charles (his brother) was lodging with the same people in 1861 & 1871:

I think this is Rebecca- no Charles with her, and I need to check it further, but it looks promising:

This is the same woman in 1871- with a son, Albert G- which I suspect is Albert George Cain:

It could be that both Charles and George gave Soloman as their father to cover their illegitimacy- But you would need their birth certificates to confirm this:

CAIN, CHARLES WILLIAM
GRO Reference: 1855 S Quarter in HAMPSTEAD Volume 01A Page 433

CUIN, ALBERT GEORGE
GRO Reference: 1867 S Quarter in HAMPSTEAD Volume 01A Page 586

I think this is Albert's baptism (it posted it above too)- (Perhaps baptised as an older child)- Solomon is crossed out and replaced with single woman:

Name: Albert George Cain
Record Type: Baptism
Baptism Date: 27 Jul 1879
Father's name: Solomon Cain
Mother's name: Rebecca Cain
Parish or Poor Law Union: Hampstead St John
Borough: Camden
Register Type: Parish Registers

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 11 Nov 2016 09:21

This looks to be a brother of Charles William Cain (senior)

Name: Albert George Cain (of 42 Rockford Street)
Estimated birth year: abt 1867
Age: 21
Spouse: Maryann Horton
Spouse Age: 19
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 1 Apr 1888
Parish: St Martin, Kentish Town
Borough: Camden
Father Name: Soloman Cain (Plaster)
Spouse Father: George Horton
Register Type: Parish Register

Witnesses: Charles William Cain & Mary Horton
-------------------------------------------------

In 1881 Albert is lodging with William Stringer- note he is from Birmingham. Perhaps he is connection as to why Charles was in Birmingham?

Nadine, you haven't gone wrong with your family research. It's just that father and son both having the same name has caused confusion.

As you rightly say - Frances M. Cain b.1915 was the daughter of Mary Ann Bass and Charles William Cain.

This Charles William Cain (junior) was the son of Charles William Cain (senior) and Elizabeth.

Helpers on here have worked out that Charles William Cain (senior) married Elizabeth Hosier.

So, Solomon Cain was the father of Charles William Cain (senior), and
Charles William Cain (senior) was the father of Charles William Cain (junior).
