According to the1939 register and the transcription of her death, Evelyn was born in 1868.

Gower Evelyn 1868 1944 1944 Civil Deaths & Burials Surrey Mid Eastern, Surrey, England

Evelyn Gower 21 Jul 1868 Female Unpaid Domestic Duties Widowed

The 1911 census has her born 1873.

Evelyn Hood Visitor Widow Female 38 1873 Sheffield

Ivy Dorothy's birthdate according to the 1939 register is different to the one on the baptism record found.

Ivy D House 23 Jan 1893 Female Unpaid Domestic Duties Married

Ivy Dorothy Hood
Baptism Date: 22 Apr 1894
At the end of the column is written Nov 7th 1892 which I presume was her date of birth.

Just pointing out that Evelyn especially may not have been too sure about her year of birth.

Thankyou!
Evelyn Hood definitely born 1868 married Joseph Gower 1915, died 1944 buried with him at Redstone Cemetery. Kathleen Matilda Joan House interred with them in 1965 - daughter of Ivy Dorothy House nee Hood who married Harry House - know that much. Appears to be two Ivy Hoods, Ivy Dorothy Hood (Enfield Middx) and Ivy D Hood (Dalsron) ours is Enfield one. Need to know why Kathleen interred there, relationship with Evelyn and Evelyn’s with Ivy. Evelyn’s maiden name would be vital - if she was married which I’m wondering now. Regards Maureen

ArgyllGran Report 10 May 2018 00:23

What was Evelyn's age said to be on her marriage cert?

Just wondering - as Joseph was a lot older than Evelyn (born c1850 per his death record), maybe she claimed to be older than she was?? 1868 instead of 1873 - ish ?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 10 May 2018 00:40

What was Ivy's father's name per her marriage cert?

(Apologies if you've already said - having read through the thread again, I don't see it.)

Thinking aloud - maybe just a lot of coincidences, but will post them just in case:

Going back to the 1901 census where Ivy (born Dalston) is a visitor to the Sims family.
The other visitors are Emma (nee Bristow, born in Dalston) and Thomas Henry Sewell.

Thomas (Tom ??) is a horse collar maker - close to being a saddler?

Emma and Thomas Henry have a daughter Emma - born 1868 in Sheffield. (you say Evelyn was born 1868, and in 1911 she claims to be born in Sheffield).

In the 1894 baptism of Ivy, it says her mother's name is Emma.
I don't see Emma Sewell after 1881.
Could she have changed her name to Evelyn ?? and claimed to be the wife of William Hood ??

I still don't see Ivy's birth, as Sewell or Hood, and there's no marriage of a William Hood to an Emma of any surname.
Don't see Reuben's birth either, as either Sewell or Hood.

Thank you ArgyllGran - think we may have found something! Just looked on map and there is Sheffield Bottom very close to Tilehurst, and Reading Berkshire. Equally Dalston, Stamford Hill and Enfield are very close together. Could be a link with the horse collar maker and saddler!!!

Hi again - Could Emma Sewell have gone to prison, are there any Prison Records, and changed her name on release?? Thinking this because Ivy Hood aged 8 was visiting Sims family in 1901 census, with Emily Sewell & Thomas Sewell (Visitors) - grandparents? - no mother there. Also have School Board for London, Sidney Rd School Hackney, 1900, with no parent or guardian name. On 1911 census Evelyn Hood and son Reuben Hood 8, staying with Edward James Smith widower and family Southend on Sea, but on 1891 his children were on census with no head of house - furthermore I found Edward James Smith in prison!!!
By the way Evelyn Hood gave aged 48 on marriage cert to Joseph Gower, which would tie up with her being 76 on death in 1944

Emma Sewell's birthplace on 1871 census says Sheffield, Yorkshire - but maybe that's an assumption by the census clerk.

In 1881 it just says Sheffield.
Evelyn Hood's birthplace is just given as Sheffield in 1911.

For whatever it's worth, when you click on Evelyn's name in the 1911 census, Ancestry suggests that she is Emma Hood, mother of Ivy.
(Not that Ancestry's always right! Far from it.)

AG I was also thinking that Emily Bristow being born in Dalston must have some significance. Also wondered about the daughter Emma born in Sheffield.

Did not equate Thomas Henry (horse collar maker) with Tom (saddler) but it seems to make sense.

I really think you're on to something here!

Ah now this is very interesting, doesn't mention any change of name though.

28 June 1884 - Reading Mercury - Reading, Berkshire, England

Basically Thomas Henry was an abusive drunk who beat his wife, who had had 20 children in all. He had thrown his eldest children out of the house, had assaulted his wife again and her daughter had to rescue her and take her next door. Thomas was sent to jail for 2 months and a separation was granted.

It is a long article and Thomas sounds a most unpleasant man who had put his wife and family through many years of hell. He took money off his children, made harnesses and then drank all the money away. Perhaps this would have led to Emma changing her name completely?
Her mother appears to have stayed with Thomas as they are together in 1901. How bizarre! She had not wanted him charged but she did want a separation.

Very interesting, AG!
Yes, an excellent reason for Emma to change her name, especially as she'd been named in the newspaper.

So, I wonder where she is in 1891 and 1901?
I've been hunting for any Emma or Evelyn born c1868 Sheffield Bottom - but none look likely so far.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 10 May 2018 13:20

Emma's brother Samuel escaped to Canada.

Married Charlotte Holmes 1901 Hackney - Samuel's father's name Tom.
Had a daughter Mabel Beatrice Minnie, 1902, Hackney.
Samuel went to Canada alone 1909 - occupation saddler.
I don't see Charlotte and Mabel following him out there, but Mabel married Sidney Sharman in 1922 in Frontenac, Ontario.
Samuel and Charlotte made a visit back to the UK in 1947, and then returned to Canada the same year.
Samuel died 1951.

I'm not posting all the records, as it's not really relevant to this thread.

Thanks again Argyllgran! Looking promising - think definitely born 1868 as ties up with Marriage Cert to Joseph Gower (48) and death in 1944 at 76.
Been trying to find Reuben Hood, the son, looked at Reuben Sewell but no answers.
