Lancashire folk followed this tradition too, but beware the odd rich relative/godparent/esteemed employer slipping in there! Naming patterns are a useful clue, not a strict recipe. OC

NAMING PATTERNS

English Naming Traditions

1st son = father's father
2nd son = mother's father
3rd son = father
4th son = father's 2nd oldest brother or mother's oldest brother
1st daughter = mother's mother
2nd daughter = father's mother
3rd daughter = mother
4th daughter = mother's oldest sister
5th daughter = mother's 2nd oldest sister or father's oldest sister


I understand that Welsh is the same as English

The Scottish custom is
1st son after father's father
2nd son after mother's father
3rd son after father
The rest ... the postman, the vicar, the milkman, ..., anyone else
they could think of.
1st daughter after mother's mother
2nd daughter after father's mother
3rd daughter after mother,
others ... whatever.

Fourth son after father's oldest brother

Have found a couple (late 18th centary, Suffolk) with 4 children but now looking for their parents. Have found likely couples but can't be sure. (all from IGI - extracted) I have: Head:- Kingsby Huntley Wife:- Elizabeth Boyce Children:- 1) Kingsby Huntley 2) Edmund Boyce Huntley 3) Thomas Huntley 4) Pheobe Huntley I think the couples Parents are Thomas and Elizabeth. AND Edmund and Pheobe Boyce. If I've got this right I have 1st Son - Father 2nd Son - Mother's Father 3rd Son - Father's Father 1st Dau - Mother's Mother Is this possable or likely??
