I don't think ancestry would take GR up on the issue of copied census data.Surely GR gives them a kick back for using the 1901?

If removing the Old Tree Programme is considered an improvement, I am flabbergasted. I am seriously considering not renewing when the time comes as the Old Tree Program was absolutely CRUCIAL to managing my info on this site. Does anyone know whether its removal is permanent? The New Tree Program is playing up something rotten at the moment.

Hi Jane & Shelia A tip which has been mentioned before about Hot Matches is adding an 'x' or something similar to the first name. It seems to stop the great lists of Smiths etc. Heather

Hello from down under, Thank you for letting us know, 33 % is a lot, but ITV must pay for the takeover somehow! Living outside of the U K we do not hear these things and also we have a problem with the Exchange rate, which is not stable so we may not pick up the price hike --So I will watch with interest. Like Jane above me I have Smith & King in my tree, today 3 pages of Smiths came in from all over the U K and only 1 from my area of interest Sheila P S I have 18 pages of Hot Tips and try as I may I can not get rid of the b***ers

Hi Nice to know someone else does not agree with hot matches, I have Smiths in my tree and they give you every single one, regardless of where they were born if mentioned, if the date is cc then I get loads. Any time I email GR about a gripe they never reply. Have to stick to the site as I am crap at the net Jane

I e-mailed them as I had expected to pay £7.50 and I eventually got a refund for the difference by constantly bugging them. The post note was that when I renew next year it will be £9.95 Elaine

Toni I dont think Ancestry says you can use it for professional use! They cannot, of course, stop you transcribing anything, but they would take a pretty dim view of cutting and pasting, and then SELLING the information. One Site, I don't think its Ancestry, monitors usage and if you start looking up lots of different surnames, they question you and you have to prove its your own family! OC

Is it really illegal to put ancestry records on here? I've seen people sell lookups on ebay. I got curious and had a look at ancestry and it does say you can use it for private and professional use. As we are helping others how could this be a problem? Toni

This has been interesting reading. A word of warning about Rootschat though if anyone is tempted to use it for requesting help - The number of postings made by each member is shown against their name and this leads to competition to bag more and more! I got caught up in such a contest between two members and it ended with one of them turning very nasty (against me!) as I'd taken the advice of the other rather than settled for what she had advised. She sent me a very rude and patronising pm, (I was a newbie then) which upset me so much that I haven't visited the site since. This board has so many kind people who wouldn't dream of being so nasty! Please don't any of you desert us! Allie

When my membership was automatically renewed in March this year, as I was ill at the time, I never checked how much they had taken from my bank. Have just checked and to my surprise £9.95 was taken. Too late to ask for a refund?? I pay for Ancestry, so £9.95 is not a lot when you look at all the help and advice about so many different subjects that is available on here, to me this makes it worthwhile to renew. I do not thank GR for this BUT I do thank its members for being so helpful. Without its members GR is nothing and they should remember that. JoJo

Valid points, Gary. GR is so busy counting the money, it doesnt have time to moderate or police the boards and has protected its own back (it thinks) by stopping anyone on here posting a web address without a lot of contortions with brackets and stars. I suspect it turns a blind eye (if it ever bothers looking) at Ancestry look-ups etc, or thinks its upto other sites to police their own activities. Long may GR inattention last! OC

What did you expect when ITV paid millions for this site, could not see then how it could have been worth any more than a couple of thousand pounds, never mind several million, it dose how ever have plus points, as has been mentioned there are free sites, eg Roots Chat, but on ther you can not paste replies directly from Ancestry, which is totaly illegal, you knw the ones that begin 'ViewRecord' this is just as illegal as copying films or music and floging them, you try posting a view record reply on any other website you will be barred , so i guess this site is good value for allowing you to put yourself in a position that if Ancestry wanted to make an example of you as some times happens to thosen illegaly downloading music, you could be fined Thousands, because the TV people that run this site no nothing about copyright law.

Helen I am constantly amazed at the patient goodwill of many of the members on this site who do repeated and extensive look-ups for certain people, who have obviously not done a single bit of research for themselves, nor bought a single certificate, are not grateful for what is found for them, carelessly delete or lose that information and then come back asking for it all over again...and again...and again.... I do wonder sometimes if these certain people think that the 'looker-uppers' are paid by GR and are part of the staff? OC
