quick update, have done 2 pages of 1907 births from typed scans had a bit of trouble with a couple of names, am never going to moan about those that do the census ones with that awful handwriting again Linda

Kate Report 21 May 2006 23:04

Yes, and don't forget Linda, we have the advantage that the names we do are in alphabetical order, unlike the census! Kate.

Brennan Report 22 May 2006 01:31

Hi all, could someone tell me if as Kate says they are done in alphabetic order why a very high amount of mine are in the Gs. I have seen some of the hand written documents and yes they do some times look like that and thats just the first letter but if all the others in the list are Ys how does it get to be a G. As Linda said about not complaining, i wouldn't, just curious. Makes it harder because there are families with that name and tend to use the same bloomin christian names etc etc, even my sister is in the Gs (1942) and the latest one so far is in the sixties, a 2nd cousin. Anyhow keep up the good work, we would be lost without you, thank you. Bren

Do you think you could do this from Australia?

Linda in the Midlands

Linda in the Midlands Report 22 May 2006 08:47

Elizabeth the syndicate I am transcribing for are based in Australia, you can do it from anywhere Bren I have no idea how your family became Y's. The programme I use tells you straight away if someone is out of sync.maybe someone with more experience can tell you Linda

Hi Claire, Well done for joining! You'll be fine, if your syndicate works the same as mine you'll do a column & send it to the syndicate for checking then s/he'll tell you it's ok & you can do the rest of the page - there's another programme to download too called 'bmdverify' which will line up the original document scan & your transcription so that you can check line by line for any errors you've made. When you've done that you just click on the 'send file to freebmd' thingy & it's gone. Contact your syndicate to say it's done & they'll send you another page. The best bit is that there's no time commitment - you just do it as quick as you can & if you go on holiday or have the in-law's/grandchildren/the Pope to stay, so have no time, it doesn't matter - you're not letting anyone down... Every page is transcribed twice by different transcribers - entries in BOLD on the site have been entered identically twice by different people so are probably correct. enjoy it! Sarah :-)

Hi Claire, DON'T GIVE UP - the hardest bit is getting the programmes set up then it's easy! I downloaded 'IRFAN VIEW' to be able to see the scans & WINBMD (never touched the 'winspeed' or whatever it's called) and BMDVERIFY & that's all I've needed. I'm not very compuer minded (- it's a bit the same as me & cars - if it gets me from A to B then that's all that matters!!) You need to go to IRFANVIEW & open the scan then open WINBMD at the same time (a small window that floats on the Irfan one) then you can get started. As you get on you'll find the picklists more & more useful...(they come up automatically when you're in WINBMD.) Your syndicate leader should be able help with any problems. Good luck Sarah :-)

Sarah

Sarah Report 22 May 2006 13:42

Hi Claire, lol! THE Wayne Rooney?? or one of his gggggrellies? Where did you get your page from? My syndicate sends mine as email attachments & then I put them in a folder I created for them (so I can find them later!) Sarah :-)

Well done Maureen - Mail your syndicate asking for another page.. Carol, if they don't get back to you, I'd just try another syndicate - when you start it's useful to have someone that replies quickly to all your queries.... Sarah :-)
