I used to run Norton, but I ditched it for AVG over a year ago and have had no problems since. I run Windows XP.

I use :- Spyware Blaster Spybot Search & Destroy Norton 2005 Ad Aware Microsoft Antispware A-Squared AVG free Zone Alarm I update & run them at least once a week, having AVG & Norton caused delays in opening my mail, so I turned the AVG mail scanner off Don't forget to visit the Microsoft Update site on a reguler basis

Maurice, I too had a problem with Outlook Express so I downloaded Free Mozilla Firefox, and also Incredimail for my emails. Jim

I'd agree with Grampa Jim, I ditched Microsoft Products for web and e-mail years ago. I now use Firefox for the web and Thunderbird for e-mail. Both are free and both will stop an awful lot of rubbish getting to you before your anti-virus software needs to do anything. Matthew

AVG firewall had a good write-up in Computing Which recently. It scored 91%: higher than any of the paid-for ones !

Maurice Report 13 Jan 2006 01:59

It is Friday 13 - coincidence ?? or not. We again ran free Avg result all clear of Viruses. We then had an expert to look at the computer he tells us that the hard drive is becoming in need of replacement. After he had run installed and ran System Mechanic which really cleaned all the rubbish. This was all finshed by just after midnight. I opened an email from Ancestry .Com (no enclosures) then went to open GR and while I was putting in my email address and password. UP FLASHED NORTON Warning again This time saying your computer has been infected with 'asdf.exe Trojan Download. How can this happen ? If I picked it up from GR has anyone else got it. My wife thought it could be something to do with the date. Norton again cannot deal with it. NORTON is set at maximum security. I must say that Avg WAS NOT ON THE COMPUTER when the virus was picked up. Had I taken your advice to ditch Norton in favour of Avg, perhaps I would be still clear. I hope this helps someone Maurice

Well I think no system is 100% Maurice. Have you run the avg7 again? Perhaps its something to do with system restore. Did you turn off system restore and run the antivirus system through? If not I guess you will have the virus stored in your puter waiting to reappear.

Incredimail as a safe alternative to Outlook Express? I don't think so. It usually plasters a nice advert on all your outgoing e-mails with a bunch of silly smileys at the bottom telling people who receive your e-mails to Click Here. I had a friend with Incredimail and she couldn't see these adverts - her friends had to tell her about it. She has taken Incredimail off and has reverted to Outlook Express. The latest version of OE is much more secure than it used to be in the bad old days as long as you remember to turn off the preview pane (which is easily done). You can also make Outlook Express pretty with nice stationery; but not a lot of people realise that because they don't explore all its features. Maurice, You sound as if you can't differentiate between the Firewall part of Norton and the Anti Virus. The Firewall would probably be set at Maximum Security rather than the AV. The AV needs to have the latest updates (Have you got them? Do you know how to get them? Do they download automatically?) and yes, you could have had the old virus in System Restore which is why it keeps reappearing. It's nothing to do with GR! The Firewall and AV are two totally different things. By the way, you never did tell us the name of that smiley programme that your wife plays with? Was it Smiley Central? It is packed with spyware. By the way, at least your Norton is telling you have this problem, but it probably can't clear it because the virus is in a System Restore point. Cheers, Horatia
