Hi Elaine I've been stupid enough not to refer to the 1881 Census a rellie sent me! He's described as John T Reed in that one, birthplace Leicester aged 40. Thank you very much for your time and patience, I'm oh so new to all of this and long for the day when I can be as adept as folks like you, if ever! Cherry

Can you give me anything to go on as I need to know her father's name if poss. I have another Elizabeth Moore in the family too and both of these girls are born in 1809, so trying to work out which married who what when etc Father names that might come up are George and Samuel. Thank you as ever Elaine

Seasonal Greeting's Elaine....... Using the resources to hand ... I Can CONFIRM that marriage John Sutton. ~ Elizabeth Moore. 5th. Nov. 1827 Nailstone. By Banns. But no mention of Parents names..:0(((( There is another Marriage in Bagworth ( Which is 3.1 Miles from Nailstone ) Elizabeth Moore. ~ Joseph Reily. 8th. Oct. 1827. Bagworth. By Banns. But again No mention of Parents ...:o(((( This could be the other Elizabeth Moore ? Do you want me to cast my eyes over these Marriages when I'm at Wigston Records Office sometime next week ? and just hope one of the Parents was a witt's..... Did you see that one of Cherry's relatives was a Boatman just wonder if they knew your Thomas & Hannah ? and where the flipping heck they were in 1851. ?...lol :0))))

Cherry Report 26 Nov 2005 21:48

Oh, I'm so sorry Elaine, Mike - I went off on a little journey hoping that I could come back and say 'Yup that's the one!' What 'worries' me is that on the 1891 & 1891 Censuses he's described as being born Leicestershire - St Margarets. His age in 1881 is given as 40. The John Thomas Reed Mike's so kindly offered up would have been round about the 38 mark on the 1881 Census and the district is Leicester St Mary De Castro Parish. I spent yonks reading through the tips board and found reference to the Hugh Wallis website so I had a look at that for Leicester and found zilch for my John Thomas! I then abandoned my search for John Thomas, thinking that tomorrow might be a luckier day and turned to his daughter, my Grandma's husband's family, only to discover that an Uncle had been killed in the First World War. That was quite a poignant moment to see the inscription on the stone and I didn't even know the guy! It's probably very necessary for me to pay attention to one thing at a time don't you think! To crown it all I was reorganising my paper files and our young kitten decided to help out when my back was turned. It'll take me a month of Sundays to put it all back together! Despite my tribulations I'm very appreciative of your help and will report back as soon as I dry the tears and get on with it lol!

Greeting's Again Cherry...... I do hope you are feeling better ...... Don't worry too much the ages don't always match up precisely from census to Census ...... Now..... We are here to help you....... So... In order to narrow it down ... Can you tell me what Occupation John Thomas has on your finding's ? I have tracked John T Read ( Parents Thomas & Caroline ) through Censuses 51, ( See post ) 61, aged 16 Labourer born St. Mary's In 71 He is aged 28. a Stoker ( Factory) Born Leicester. & married To a Sarah A. aged 25. On the 81 census ( Both through my Disks & via the Nett ) I can only find the following :- JOHN READ 41. Traveler in Boot & Shoe Trade. Born just Leicester. Wife. just as S. A. Or JOHN READ 38. Shoe Maker. born St. Mary's. Married to a Elizabeth. born All Saints Leicester. Best tell your Kitten to...... ' Paws for thoughts' next time ..lol.... :0)))) Look forward to your next message ..... MIKE.

Hi everyone, If anyone is going to the record office please can they help? My great grandfather George Dagley brn 1883 does not appear on ancestry for the 1891 or 1881 census. In 1882 he married Ellen Jones,so in 1892 he should be listed as having 2 children - Laura and Frederick. I have seen the record for 1881 but he is not living with his parents. He would around 18. Did they do any military service at this time?? Very confused!!! Trudi

Hi Mike I think we must be related somewhere along the line, you read my mind about the boatman and knowing my lot. Yes please would appreciate you looking at the records office for me. Have seen a thread about Banns Registers. Do you know if St Margs would have one at the records office? might be the only way I am going to find where Thomas and Hannah were born . Thanks as always Elaine

Hi again Mike! Kitten's given up on genealogy and resumed his original hobby of knocking seven bells out of the older cat,lol I've given him 'paws for thoughts' and clipped his claws, that'll give him a little less purchase on my paperwork and hopefully the Sunday papers too! Well........... my elusive (John) Thomas Reed/Read, (why oh why couldn't he have been a Montague Scrutton Mawdesley or summat?) The info which I know to be 100% is:- 1881 Census Occupation : Army Pensioner Laundryman (Leicestershire - St Margarets) (wife not listed but was poss having one of the kids?) he married a widow Laura Eliza Donnelly nee Blaver in Bengal 1875 As he was 34 when they married and Laura brought her two girls Laura and Adelaide (both born in India) into the household I did wonder whether he too had been married previously but perhaps he was just a late starter for those days, lol 1891 Census Occupation Laundryman (Leicestershire - St Margarets) Wife Louisa E Read Hmm... wonder whether his parents were in the laundry business too, perhaps they lived in shed off the beaten track and escaped the census. Many thanks again for your time and trouble Cherry
