Could I reply to the msg and say I mistook the year?

Heather Report 4 Mar 2005 14:02

Ann that is the four people who married that day in that place. Jess looked it up for you. Two of them are the names of your Great Grandfather and Grandmother. Marriages Jun 1895 CLARK JAMES Southampton 2c 56 WRIGHT ANNIE ALICE Southampton 2c 56 You go to GRO on line, click on marriage certificates, enter their names and click that you have the GRO reference. There will be a box for the year - enter that. Then you enter the reference you have there for Southampton, the volume and the page. So you need year : 1895 Quarter: June Place : Southampton Volume: 2c Page 56 Then go down and click on the £7 option. Double check it again then click proceed. Pay with your credit card. You could try to email them first and say you had already paid them £19 because of an error you didnt get the cert. If you are lucky and they are amenable you may get it free. Big IF though.

Yes, why dont you mail them back and say there was an error and you see they were looking for 1865 when it was 1895. Maybe they will be kind, eh? Good luck.

Brilliant Lisa ! No wonder I couldnt find young Charles - theyve spelled his surname CLACK !!! Sooooo, we had the right lines earlier about being with his grandparents.. or rather great Aunt/Uncle ? Great - really pleased for you! 1901 England Census Name Age in 1901 Birthplace Relationship Civil Parish County ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Edward Bate 29 Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England Boarder Portsmouth Hampshire Herbert K Biggs 34 Hampstead, London, England Boarder Portsmouth Hampshire ->Charles Clack 4 Southampton, Hampshire, England Grandson Portsmouth Hampshire Alfred Hardy 44 Milford, Surrey, England Boarder Portsmouth Hampshire Annie James 40 Southampton, Hampshire, England Wife Portsmouth Hampshire Charles James 44 Walford, Northamptonshire, England Head Portsmouth Hampshire

Can you just help me a bit more... can't wait to go home and tell my granddad... Living Marlborough House, Portsea Charles James, 33, Engine driver Railway, b. London Annie James, wife, 31, b. Hants, Southampton Annie Wright, niece, 13, Tailors apprentice, b. Hants Southampton Jane Daughty, mother-in-law, widow, b. Devon Dartmouth somehow I think Annie James - became Granny Dunn to Grandad - does anyone know if Nancey was a nickname for Annie? I am really struggling work this one out... So Annie Wright in 1891 was 13, she went on to marry James Clark in 1895.. Then they had a child (first one) Charles Thomas Clark - who we think shows up in Portsmouth living with Annie James and Charles James, but he is listed then as their Grandson, wonder why? Then later in 1901 they are living in Newcastle up tyne and they have a daughter called Isable, who granddad thinks died in a fire as a baby 9mths or something... Then granddad was born in 1909 in southampton with Annie and James as his parents (of course) he says there was another sister called grace.. I'm curious about Charlie though in Portsmouth. What do you think? can you help me in my mind? Anne

and before anyone else starts looking for Charles anywhere else, 'Walford' in Northants is probably a mistranscription for WELFORD Jess

Please don't leave me I've been struggling on my own for weeks and this is such a break throough for me.. I'm just going to check my tree... because I wonder where I got the parents for Annie Alice Wright as:- Matilda Jane Doughty and Henry Wright if you say that Annie James was the mother of Annie Alice Wright?

Annie

Annie Report 4 Mar 2005 14:33

Dear Laird, Where did you find this info was it 1901

Unknown Report 4 Mar 2005 14:35

She's her aunt. I got muddled. So Charles Clark is really her great-nephew. Charles James is only in it by marriage. Jane DAughty - Lisa found her in 1891 as mum-in-law, so she must be Annie James MUM, and thus your Alice's gran - ie a sister of Alice's mum... Charles James, 33, Engine driver Railway, b. London Annie James, wife, 31, b. Hants, Southampton Annie Wright, niece, 13, Tailors apprentice, b. Hants Southampton ->Jane Daughty, mother-in-law, widow, b. Devon Dartmouth Heres some possible sisters for your Dad - if Hampshire is still the right county. Births Sep 1903 Clark Grace Amelia Southampton 2c 17 Births Jun 1907 Clark Grace Jessie K Southampton 2c 17 Births Jun 1909 CLARK Grace Ena Bradfield 2c 335 Births Sep 1909 CLARK Grace Madeline Basingstoke 2c 222

Ann it acutally says that Annie James is the aunt of your Great Grannie. Also, if you look on the list of people there there is a mother-in-law (which would be Annie James mum) with the name Doughty. That lady would be your Annies gran - your Great Grannie x 3. So the marriage you have with the Matilda Doughty as Annies mum would be correct. Annie James is Matilda's married sister. It may say Grandson for Charles because grannie Doughty has been left off the census by accident or is on another page. It doesnt make any difference, it could just be the enumerator getting the relationships mixed up. So dont worry about that.

I think you need to slow down a bit, and digest what has evolved today. think about what you know is fact and what you can draw from what you have been told. Yes, its all exciting and yes, you want all the answers but bet you will see things you didnt even realise were there if you sit and digest what is there, Some people will still be here tommorow, Rome wasn't built in a day jess

Fantastic info.. That's where I have been struggling all these days... I just couldn't get the connection between Annie James and why Charles Clark was living with her.. How do I know which Grace to choose, will that be more apparent when I get the Marriage Certificate. Oh and great news they said they will re do the search for me how nice are they!!!

Annie

Annie Report 4 Mar 2005 14:44

Apparently Granddad tells me that:- Annie James later became Granny Dunn (as her husband was killed) and she was married to Edward John Dunn - on her gravestone though it says Nancey and just wondered if that was a nickname for Annie? Granddad remembers living with Annie James and then she must have gone on to marry again. what do you think?

Take Jess' advice - print this thread off and go thru it slowly later. I jumped to the wrong conclusion earlier as you saw ! Only point is about the 'grandson' relationshipo on the 1901. Remember the relationship is TO the HEAD of family. So its a mistake, even if a real grandmother was there. Enjoy.

Heather

Heather Report 4 Mar 2005 14:47

Thats really good, will they do it free of charge? Brilliant conclusion, all round, eh. If I were you, Id print off all this info and spend some time sorting it out on paper and in your mind. Nancy could be a nick name for anything, my dad uses it for me and Im Heather - so dont let that worry you at all. It could be that her real name was Nancy and they called her Annie as a nickname! These are the right people and now you can send off for the cert and see your Great Grandads side starting up too.
