I keep finding names that match the ones I have on my list but quite a few names hane no birth year or place of birth next to them. Why is this I thought these were mandatory sections. I have tried not to put these details in and it won't allow me. Is this a fault??

Jacqueline, Names without places and dates have been loaded in with Gedcom files. If you enter names manually you have to fill these fields in. Crista

I find that very annoying how can you get in touch with people if they dont give any info, you cant get in touch with them all, i know a lot of people wont have the info but a rough idea would help

Rosi Report 3 Aug 2003 21:45

Wouldn't it be wonderful if all the people who loaded the info via Gedcom files actually went back over all the names and made the necessary amendments. It IS so frustrating to see just names, without places or dates. And there seem to be more of them than of the ones that have. It's probably something to do with incompatibility, dates put in as 14th April 1925, not 14/04/1925 or summat- but knowing the reason doesn't help.

Dear fellow serious researchers the question is ....why did they bother with GenesConnected in the first place?? The same people who don't supply the 20th and 19th century information that most of us are searching for, seem very happy to clog up the site with their own offspring....who wants to know about Jason and Sharon born in 1976?

Dorothy

Dorothy Report 3 Aug 2003 22:15

Oh Susan! Made me laugh no mean feat late on Sunday night. Perhaps it would be worth suggesting to GenesConnected that they adjust this. As you say what's the good asking about William born in 1843 to find he was born in 1998? The time span's too large, and it's a big country.

i Shall remove my Jason and Sharon straight away, sorry to have caused any trouble.

Heather Report 3 Aug 2003 22:27

this is supposed to be a genes connected site and forgive me if i' wrong but aren't the "Jasons and Sharons" of this world just as much a part of our trees as our earlier ancestors, without them there is no future and therefore there will be no past and just from the reading the various boards past rellies are found by finding living ones too. but i do agree that it would be more helpful if approx dates of birth were input onto the site heather

Well said. Its up to the individual who they see fit to enter as their family.

Hello All Glad to see that some of you saw the joke. Seriously though, what is the point of putting young people on this site? I certainly have no intention of naming my cbildren or my brothers and sister. Surely that comes AFTER you have made a family connection you feel you want to share that very private and current information with someone you have connected with? Aren't we looking for ancestors on GenesConnected?. That's just my opinion....but when I get a notification to say the 4 new names have been added to my interest, what a let down when they are younger than my teenage boys. Sue

The point is they are still our Genes, no matter how old they are.

Uploaded gedcom files are a pain in the proverbials, due not only to the lack of dates causing unnecessary enquiries but also every time someone uploads one it shows the whole lot as new names, so every couple of weeks I find 350 new names showing on my family name which has about 450 total.

Clare What happened last night was that Paul had written a message saying give the bloke a chance, and said something about what you had said before. and he repeated the words and said I hope that Darren didnt see your words. And then to top it all off he spelt my name wrong. so I responded by saying that darren had seen the words now, and I told him how to spell my name right, but this morning I deleted and said sorry for being rude. and then he deleted his. I think that is what happened anyway. sorry to go on a bit. Debbie

Well I'm glad I know the reason and I agree what is the point of loading GED files if they aren't going to give the correct info. Isn't this the point of this site sharing information

Unknown

Unknown Report 3 Aug 2003 23:18

Gedcom files are alot easier to add info too, i have a couple of cases where didtant cousins have married, but this site doesnt allow for that, with my gedcom i can see who was who without having to add it all twice.

May I say a word in defence of the 'no details' brigade. As has been said before, uploading using gedcom is much easier - particularly when you have several thousand names! In fact it's the only way, and so the results you get can sometimes appear to be either too many people (ie the later generations) or many with sparse details - I have several entries with first names only - I can't delete them because the link to the other generations would be broken. I have several names and no other information. The reasons are many and various - ie a name that has been mentioned as an offspring or relative and beneficiary in a will, but whose birth cannot be found anywhere - what better provenance can you ask for? Others may well be an unqualified entry in the IGI, but nevertheless a valid entry in a family tree. So come along you guys - don't get all up in the air about this issue - after all, we're all trying for the same goal.....aren't we? Graham
