Where oh where are their maternal instincts???

These women are as much to blame if not more so than the animals that damage these poor kids.

The day my girls were born I knew I'd kill to protect them.........

Thank you Ann and Caz. There are things that reasonable people actually can't disagree on. ;)

The other story reported -- let it be said that many 17-year-old men aren't much better candidates for fatherhood than 50-yr-old men hooking up with 20-yr-old women. Babies just aren't what they're interested in.

Many 17- and 20-yr-old women aren't either. There has got to be more that can be done to get the teenaged pregnancy rate down.

An interesting aside -- in the old thread that got bumped back up today, about people being hanged, there is a list of women executed in the olden days. The most common offences were murdering husband and murdering "bastard child".

One wonders how many of the husband murders were battered women / self-defence ... and how many of the child murders weren't by women acting completely alone.

I suspect that murders of children by abuse and neglect weren't treated as homicide in the day; one would have had to actually drown one's child for it to have been called murder. And unmarried women were still probably a lot more likely to get charged than married mothers or fathers, or unmarried fathers, I also suspect.

Bless her, Ruby was already on the at risk register, why couldn't the social worker watch her with the 'parents' and see how she reacted - she would have known then that there was a big problem and should have taken Ruby to a safe foster home.
I don't understand how a previously loving if young and inexperienced mother can suddenly let her child be tortured by someone and still feel in love with him or whatever feeling they call it. I wouldn't have given any man the time of day if I saw him ill treat my child, he wouldn't know what hit him.

OMG Liz. I can't believe that people could treat a precious child like this. Poor poor little Ruby. My blood has run cold.

I hope something happens to redress the balance to the mother and her boyfriend..........if I said what I REALLY think I'd be banned for life. I hope they rot in hell.

RIP Ruby.......you deserved better xx

Here is another awful case in Norfolk.

copied from the local paper:

Social services were alerted to fears that baby Ruby Spink was being subjected to sustained abuse and neglect weeks before she was killed, it emerged yesterday.

The 11-month-old's tragically short life was outlined by prosecutors at Norwich Crown Court as they opened the trial against her alleged murderer. She died after her “floppy and lifeless body” was rushed to the James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston last September. About a month earlier she had been placed on the county's “at risk” register.

The jury heard post-mortem evidence showing she was killed by a blow to the head - and she had also suffered broken ribs and fractures to both legs in separate incidents before her death. On one occasion she is said to have suffered two black eyes.

Over a matter of months she turned from a “happy and thriving child” to a baby who cried every time her mother's boyfriend went near.

Ruby's 18-year-old mum Laura Spink has already admitted neglect but her 17-year-old boyfriend, who cannot be named for legal reasons, denies murder. Instead he claims Ruby died accidentally after choking on a piece of cake - though an examination found no signs of this.

Prosecutor Christopher Morgan showed the court a picture drawn by the defendant, who was not Ruby's father. Across it he had scrawled the words “Ruby in hell”, indicating, Mr Morgan said, his attitude of disdain towards the baby.

Residents at the Yarmouth women's hostel where Spink lived with Ruby told police how the couple handled the baby roughly. They would call her a “skank” and “monkey”, referring to her mixed race origin. At the time of Ruby's death, the defendant was banned from visiting because of concerns over his behaviour.

Mr Morgan said Ruby had been a “happy and thriving child” when she moved into the hostel. Spink was described as being a good parent, but Ruby's welfare declined after her mother met the defendant and later became pregnant by him.

He said: “This was, as many teenage relationships are, an intense relationship. Because of this it seems Miss Spink's priorities became blurred. She would often leave Ruby in the care of younger friends who were only 13 or 14 and would show off in front of her boyfriend and wouldn't be nice to Ruby.

“Fellow residents reported him throwing her around and calling her a monkey. Ruby would cry every time the defendant went near her.

“Miss Spink did not question why this was - it is not clear whether she knew what was going on or whether she was turning a blind eye to the abuse. She says she never saw him abuse her but seems to have accepted his explanations for any injuries.”

The case continues.

Why did the people in the hostel not report the actions of this evil couple towards this dear little mite.

Ruby and Tiffany, and all ill treated little ones, may you rest in peace now, free from pain and suffering.

Anybody notice this?

--------------------------------------

She lived above the pub ran by her mother Sabrina Hirst, **22**, and stepdad Robert Hirst, **54**.

They were originally accused of murder but the charges were reduced to manslaughter for Sabrina and neglect for Robert, which they both admitted.

A Serious Case Review has been launched by Sheffield Safeguarding Children Board into Tiffany's death and the neglect of another child - aged 12 months - to which the couple have also pleaded guilty.

------------------------------------

The stepfather was old enough to be the grandfather -- to be the father of the girl's mother.

There's something seriously wrong with a man over 50 who takes up with a woman of 20 with a child. His reasons will not usually have much to do with wanting to be a father to her child. Young women whose options are limited by early motherhood can be vulnerable to predators looking for women they can control and exploit sexually.

No knowledge of the facts of this case, but:

Young single mothers can be depressed and socially isolated. A 20-year-old woman with a social life and a job, or going to school, is not likely to fall for a 50-year-old man.

The circumstances -- the child was loved and cared for before the man came into the picture -- suggest that the man was controlling and abusive. Women in that situation can grow to see their survival as dependent on the man's good will. If giving care and attention to their children causes the man to be displeased, both the women and the children are at risk.

Again, I don't know the circumstances of this case. But if it fits the pattern, it's too common, and too many women and children are at risk.

The signs are there for everyone to see when this kind of situation exists. If the woman can't or won't remove herself from it, there is always someone who can take some action to protect the children. If I were one of those someones and I did nothing, I'd never forgive myself.
