It's the same the whole world over
It's the poor what gets the blame
It's the rich what gets the gravy
Ain't it all a bleeding shame.

Oh yes please Peter. A poll tax. Something that everybody pays the same, rich or poor.

Yes, that's the way modern societies do things, isn't it?

Memories are short.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poll_tax_riots

The Poll Tax Riots, as they became known, were acts of civil disobedience carried out in London and other British cities and towns. They were in protest against the Community Charge (commonly known as the poll tax) introduced by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her government.

It is thought that the demonstrations together with the general opposition to the Community Charge (which was especially vehement in the North of England and Scotland) strongly contributed to the downfall of Margaret Thatcher, who resigned as Prime Minister before the end of the year.

Oh, sigh.

She doesn't want to pay her council taxes because she doesn't use blablabla services.

I don't want to pay my income taxes because I don't use blablabla services.

It really isn't a question of which tax pays for what now, is it? If she can say nay to council taxes, I can say nay to income taxes.

For instance: people who never had kids, will never have kids, and have enough money to retire comfortably without ever needing a bus pass or pension.

Yet they must still pay taxes for other people's kids to go to school.

You surely see where this is going.

The rich should not have to pay taxes, because they can pay for their own

private rubbish removal
private security
private schools
private health care
private airplanes
private cars
private pension plans

It can start anywhere, but it ends up pretty much the same place. The rich get richer ...

Surely the answer is to bring in a Poll (i.e. head count) tax.

That way everyone would contibute, regardless of who they are.

Seems very fair to me?

My late sister received the annual account for her council tax and spotted that a donation had been made to a group which she found objectionable on moral grounds.

She wrote to the council enclosing her payment less the percentage that represented her contribution to this group.

She never had a reply and they never chased her for the balance.

The Police? LOL - no, just thought it was the best thing to do. They were in a marked car and everything so felt safe in flagging them down. Bet it made for an interesting evening for a change! lol
