I'm not sure how old David is but if he is under 18 then the support offered will be from CAMHS. While the services they offer are good, they are usually underfunded, understaffed and have huge waiting lists.

Try contacting the National Autistic Society who are a mine of information.

Also think about joining this forum, they are a group of fantastic parents with a wealth of experience and have a vast amount of knowledge between them.

Edited: to say contact social services either adults/children (not sure of David's age) regarding an assessment for services for his learning disability. I find Aspergers tends to get put in the mental health catagory (with less services on offer) instead of learning disabled.

dawn i can understand your frustration it took me 10 yrs , to get a diagnosis, people would tell me david was autistic id never heard of it, but when i mentioned it to doctors i was told not to listen to people, i thought about suing but his records went missing, i wouldnt have had the strengh to sue and who would i be suing, i dont even like getting my petrol allowance back as we live 21 miles from the nearest one.waffled on there sorryxx, a vollunteer barnardos helper watch him one day , and said what he had then of course it was diagnosed by the doctor who had been seeing him its so hard when your ill yourself too xx

in the National Health Service as a whole, Mental Health is at the bottom of the pile and I can say this because I have seen it time and time again after working in a psychiatric hospital for nearly thirty years

my experience of the mental health team isnt a good one seems to take ages to get anything done and then when they say things they will do they never happen. Am over 18months down the line with them and still no further appt to get laddo assessed is only because of one of the associated team members that we are so far along and shes the one that has said he will more than likely be diagnosed with aspergers.

Adult mental health may be different and quicker I know a friend was under them but wasnt for Aspergers.

with you , especially for parents of children with aspergers, in the last year many of you supported me in hoping david would find some security in a job or college, he chose college first, but because he wasn't getting the help he was supposed to get he left, with no communication from the college.
i wasn't ever told that he should have had transistion help which thanks to daff i have been to connexions to find out why we were let down, of course they passed the buck.
david tried a job in the kitchen of a restraunt, he was promoted he left ( children/adults with aspergers cant handle change), i asked david what job did he think he could do, he said he wanted to work outside so i phone every builders merchents in a 40 mile radious, some one took him on, the first week at work was great i would look forward to him comming home telling me builders tales, however the next week he was working in a different area so he nver went back i didn't realise what was happening at the time twould have been different, i found out to day at the doctors that he had attempted suicide last week from frustration and depression common in this condition, i was aware he was low and i was concsious that he may try and kill himself as he had done it lots of times before, but today i demanded help and someone from the mental health team will contacting me any day, anyone any experiance of them t hat you could let me know by pm or here i would be very great full many thanks xxx
