Hi ..

Had this message today might be of interest to some of you. Must stress this is for carers of people with all kinds of illnesses and disabilities.

Linda x

As you may already be aware, a large protest is being planned, by carers, in response to the lack of practical and financial help by the government.
We are planning a Protest in London and as many towns and cities as possible, all at the same time, to enable as many carers as possible to participate.
Most of the comments regarding the protest can be viewed on the CUK forum http://www.carersuk.org/Forums/
We want to reach as many carers as possible and were wondering if you could inform your members of what is being planned. It would be most helpful if you could see how many would like to join in..
Please feel free to e-mail me with any queries you may have regarding this and hope to hear from you soon.

I'm not a carer, but am aware of the financial and emotional burden this puts on people. It's about time governments realised how much money carers save the country, and recompendsed them properly.
I find it strange that you can get over £300 a week for fostering an older child, with all the help you can get, but are expected to live on a pittance with the minimum of help if you take in your own parent to care for them, and have to struggle to make ends meet if you have a disabled child.
They should also do more for younger children who end up looking after their disabled parents.

Because we also get the top rate of attendance allowance and it is paid every week we are managing pretty well, also because we are poor enough to have free carers.
What I am not happy about is the fact that carers allowance does not attract other concessions.I would like to be able to go to college for a few hours a week, elderly stroke victims are not as intellectually stimulating as they might be,but would have to pay.
Also I have to pay for prescriptions unless I fill in long complicated forms designed,I am sure,to dissuade people from trying.
The admin is actually the hardest part of the job. I am reasonably intelligent and find it hard so I dread to think how much elderly or people who are not terribly bright or confident are missing out on.

Hi Linda
As you know I will give my support to the campaign, Although I'm no longer a carer and not ready to be cared for yet
Recently I went to a seminar for people over 60 ,amongst the items covered were leisure activities and services offfered to older people and their carers
I was really shocked by the amount charged by the local council for certain services for older people and their carers.
They say they will fund financial support for people with dementia according to goverment guidelines

But the dementia that is listed is one of the very rarest forms
So the financial burden on the council will be very mininmal if at all

I have an elderly friend age 87 undergoing a bowel cancer operation on Tuesday her husband same age has Parkinsons and Macular Degeneration amongst other conditions yet is expected to care for her when she comes home. Social services in her area are so overstretched they are unable to help. The Macmillan Nurses are doing their best to help thank goodness. I live 30 miles from her so can't go everyday. She has sons both live 150 miles away and between them are taking time off work to care for their father a sorry state of affairs!

Trouble is at their age their friends are either dead or have poor health themselves.

I was a carer to my oh for five years my son is a carer to my gson i think all the carer's should get a decent wage not an allowance. May be all carer's in Britain should turn up at social service's at the same time on the same day and ask what help they are entitled to and for help to fill in the forms. Or turn up at their local M.P's surgery at the same time on the same Day that my help to wake the goverment up. Hi Linda hope you are ok

I would like to add my support to this thread. I Was a carer for 25 years. The money was rubbish but any other kind of support had to be fought for too.

Carers Unite, and sort out the beaurocracy and uncaring attitude of the Powers that be!
