I suppose they have to do something to get more people voting as the number of people who do vote is shockingly low. I think our ancestors who fought for the right would turn in their graves.

This is according to Yahoo news....

Voters could receive free donuts or entries to a prize draw in exchange for voting by local councils, under the government's new white paper on 'community empowerment'.

The white paper suggests providing "incentives for voting in local government elections", such as by prize draws. The previous chairman of the Councillors Commission, Dame Jane Roberts, has suggested that this could involve free donuts.

The proposal is designed to encourage a higher turnout, but the Conservatives have already jumped in the idea as proof of Labour's desperation to convince its core voters to turn up on polling day.

"This will allow Labour councils to mobilise the disillusioned and demoralised Labour core vote at taxpayers' expense," a spokesperson said.

Other proposals in the white paper include 'remote voting' for councillors so they can contribute to council meeting when unable to attend in person and a weakening of the rule whereby council officers cannot become councillors.

Shadow local government secretary Eric Pickles said: "These policies are the product of a bankrupt Labour party, wanting to stuff more cash into the pockets of Labour councillors, bribe their voters, bring back jobs for the boys and slip in back-door state funding."

Caz as you say.... frighteningly scary..... big brother with donuts as a treat for good behaviour... how very condescending!!

Lol Kitty... I am off now to check around.... see where else this is reported!

The Government White paper should be available somewhere

And of course...... it is the good old British taxpayer who will fund this!!

~Summer Scribe~ Report 9 Jul 2008 20:29

Conservatives have a point as the stereotypical middle to upper class that usually vote for the tories aren't going to be lured in by donuts.

And whatever happened to encouraging healthy eating?

Although.... mmmmm donuts :)

wait... we're in the UK...it's spelt Doughnuts :P

♫chris in oz♫ Report 9 Jul 2008 20:30

yep at council state and federal elections
if you dont go and vote your fined
wish they would give us a donut while we are
standing in line lol

~Summer Scribe~

~Summer Scribe~ Report 9 Jul 2008 20:37

I think fining for a no show is far better and would bring in revenue rather than costing it like an incentive would because lets face it...the tax payer would end up footing the bill for the donuts or whatever they offered.

Maybe they should make us vote too.................but I suspect there would be hundreds of thousands of spoilt ballot papers:)

MrDaff

MrDaff Report 9 Jul 2008 20:38

Hiya Chris... yes, I know, and I think it should be here too......

I agree.... doughnuts it is.... cos they are made from dough..... not do!!

I wouldn't want to live in a country with a government elected because of *incentives*... the incentives I want to see are not doughnuts and silly little perks!! It's decent policies, committment, honesty...

I can feel a rant coming on... off to have a shower, lol!!
