Eileen, that is one of the worst things I have ever heard, surely your husband could have contested the will somehow and shown there was no reason for your s.i.l. to have the money as well, or the flat should have been sold and shared out.
What an evil b***h, is your s.i.l. still alive? She deserves worse than rotting in hell...

30+ years ago, and it still p...s me off. My new h.to.be and I both lived and worked in the South. My future in laws lived in the North. My s.in.law-to be lived in Peterborough. We sent them nice invites to the wedding which was to be quite quiet as my father had died only two months before.
We kept not getting any replies, and eventually my h-to-be rang his parents, quite close to the date by then. They said his sister wanted to go up there for Easter, so they couldn't come, and neither would she be doing..........I still spit bits of fluff thinking about it after all these years.

Later my s.in.law overheard m.i.l making her will --m i l was housebound by then, and very deaf, so the solicitor came to the house and had to shout a lot.--She was leaving her flat to daughter and her money to my husband - both would have got pretty much equal shares. S i l. got motherinlaw to write a big cheque 70k the day after she signed the will, so when she died there was nothing for my oh, and sister in law still had the flat, and had had the money about six months earlier........She bought a posh bungalow with the money and then put ma in law in a Home, where she died quite soon.
Rotting in H..ll would be too good for my sister in law.

I always thought green was supposed to be unlucky for weddings!
Never got married myself so never had that problem lol

If I ever tie the knot in future, I won't have a lot of choice, tents don't come in many colours do they lol?

I know where you're coming from Blue. When we got married my lot all lived in Canada so we went there for the wedding. MiL came to help me choose my dress. Had to be strong so I got what I wanted.
My lot KNOW that my least favourite colour, in fact I hate it, is green. So what colour did they ALL decide to wear? Yep. That meant that my hubby also had to buy a suit when we got there to go in with my brother's as he was best man.

Thanks guys for the support and hugs.
Some of your experiences made me gasp and say "wot" it seems I'm not the only one with relatives/friends who don't give a thought for someone else before they act.

((((((((((((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))))))))) for you too.

Blue Eyes, I understand how you must feel - I had similar done to me years ago, when we were trying to decide what to buy my elderly parents a Ruby Wedding gift. Mum said she wouldn't mind some nice china for best, I knew what she meant and knew she just wanted thinnish china but not expensive as she was a bit wobbly so wouldn't want to break expensive stuff.
Then she told me my sister in law, fairly new to the family, had taken her to a large posh store and chosen the china, and she would tell me how much my share was.
As a single Mum I wasn't very well off, my s.i.l. was as she had a house her ex had paid for and my bro moved into, and he had a business. I have another bro, a partner in an accountant's so very well off too, and his wife worked full time, and the cheeky beggars said I had to pay a third of the cost of the gift and the total was nearly £100!!! This was in 1985 so quite a lot of money! In the end I only gave them a fifth of the total.
I was also upset because the pattern didn't go with anything Mum had, colour etc, and Mum hardly used it as she was too nervous in case she broke it.
Mum was browbeaten by s.i.l and she hadn't dared say she didn't want to go shopping with her in case she caused offence, never mind she caused offence to me. It quite spoiled the anniversary cos they caused problems over the surprise party I had arranged too, and my younger brother changed the venue, which turned out to be too big a room, so cold and people didn't mix well altho I know Mum and Dad enjoyed seeing all their relatives and friends together.

Marilyn, that's a shame, have you no other friends to go away with? Hope you manage to sort something out so you get a holiday.

That is a pity Blue Eyes, I can understand how you feel.......it is awful to feel sidelined by family.....

I agree with Ann, I bet they didn't even realise how thoughtless they were being, and would feel miserable if they realised they had hurt you.....

....just read it again, and realised that one sister is saying it is a spur of the moment thing, and the other is saying it was arranged a couple of days prior........yes, that would hurt me too.....

Gerald - I didn't see your first posting, but it takes guts to apologise in public. :-))

Blue - you just concentrate on you and your lovely hubby-to-be; you don't need more stress. If your mum isn't interested in your dress, WE are!
Take care, you.

I maybe would have thought that, if I hadn't seen them both over the weekend and even though we'd talked about August and the day out, they hadn't even mentioned going out today.

Guess the wedding dress will be a "surprise" too not that mum has shown any real interest, if I asked her she wouldn't know if I'd bought one or not.

My youngest wanted me and her sister to go to a Wedding Dress Fair to look at the dresses. Her sister happened to be moving that weekend. Youngest & I went - not expecting to actually buy anything - and she fell in love with a dress!!
She had to buy it because she may never see another one like it!! Perhaps that's what happened with your mother.
I nearly bought a mother of the bride outfit too- but daughter wasn't sure what colour green she's putting with the pink on the bridesmaids dresses - her fiance will have to wear a waistcoat the same colour and he's fussy about green (he's already vetoed some lovely dresses we saw in Monsoon)!!
Actually we decided at the Fair - it will be eau de nil.
